Mental Health and School Counseling
93% and 78%
93% of adults feel that suicide is preventable at least sometimes. 78% would be interested in learning how to play a role in helping someone who may be suicidal. As helping professionals, it's safe to assume we are all part of both of the 93% and 78%! We hope you use and share the resources in this newsletter and our last to help others in the 78% who want to learn how to help. Please feel free to forward along the newsletter or resources to the staff on your campus!
How are each of you? We hope you are well. What is something you have done for yourself lately? Have you taken your full lunch break, gone for a walk, said no to something, gone to see your counselor, or even just taken a minute to intentionally breathe? I want to encourage you to make a plan to do some form of self care! Linked here is a 5 minute guided meditation if that floats your boat!

Return to School Following Hospitalization
This informational flyer (available in English and Spanish) for families who have school-age children in inpatient care for mental health is now available at San Antonio hospitals. It outlines the benefits of talking to school counselors so their students receive educational support. We hope this will facilitate important conversations with parents/guardians and students at your campuses.
Often, staff members such as teachers, coaches, and front office personnel find out a child has been hospitalized before their school counselor does. Please talk to your faculty about the importance of sharing this information with you, and ensure your campus has a notification process in place.
When coding students at-risk for PEIMS submissions, keep in mind indicator #13 reads: resided in the preceding school year or resides in the current school year in a residential placement facility in the district, including a detention facility, substance abuse treatment facility, emergency shelter, psychiatric hospital, halfway house, or foster group home. We have clarified that the facility does NOT need to be in the district for this criterion to apply.
