Whitford Catholic Primary School
Newsletter 17 - 7 June 2017
Message from the Principal
This morning our student leaders represented the school at the official launch of Lifelink, at Newman College in Churchlands. As it is WA Week, this event was the opportune time to focus on and remember people in need within our community, right here ‘at home’ in WA.
As part of the Archdiocese of Perth, primary schools this year were asked to get behind the ‘Open Your Hearts to People in Need’ campaign. Our students have been involved in producing Lifelink Day Hearts and wearing red as a powerful visual representation of how we can work together as one catholic family, to reach out to those in need. Thank you to everyone for supporting the appeal today.
Year 3B and ‘Are We There Yet’?
Well done to our students in Year 3B who took us on some great adventures around Australia with their assembly item last Friday. A top job!
Year 5 & 6 Interschool Sport
Reports back from staff and parents about our students’ involvement in interschool sporting teams has been very positive. Congratulations to all students for participating, having fun and supporting each other in their teams. Something of which to be proud.
We wish our teams the best of luck in the Interschool Lightning Carnival tomorrow.
Thank you for your continued support and best wishes for a wonderful week.
Many blessings
Tamara McGougan

Class News
Pre Kindy
It was an exciting morning watching the recycling bin being emptied. We have started talking about Winter and the changes in our weather.
Kindy
Today Kindy White did our first "Kiss and Go"! We're encouraging independence skills, such as bringing our own items into class and everyone did so well!
We also welcome back Mrs Harvey from her long service leave!
Pre Primary
We have celebrated Lifelink day by creating love heart art in our playground. We talked about ways we can show love to others in need.
We are very lucky to have people who love us ❤️
Year 1
Last week the Year 1 and Year 5 children went to church. We listened to Father Joe talk to us about loving our families and friends. We said some prayers for the Holy family and our families. We were excited and happy to be there.
Year 2
Playing is linked to the development of resilience and the beginnings of empathy as children begin to understand other points of view.
At 8:30 2G set up for the school day then bring out the trays of lego and play happily until the bell rings.
We’d like to thank Mr Gorman for his kind donation of a big box of lego and some bases.
Year 3
We are becoming legends at paragraph writing! We know that a paragraph is like a hamburger! The topic sentence is the top of the bun, then comes three supporting sentences... that's the tomato, meat and lettuce and lastly we have the bottom of the bun which is the concluding sentence. Check out our paragraphs about our heros!
Year 4
What an amazing excursion we had visiting the WA Art Gallery and State Library last Friday. The children had a great day, with lots of new learning taking place, as well as opportunities for them to apply the knowledge that they have acquired in the classroom. We’ve become confident and skilled art critics!
Year 5
In art we looked at a painter named 'James Rizzi' who specialised in portraits that were bright, bold and quirky. We then created our own portraits following his style. We definitely have some budding artists in Year 5!
Year 6
The year six children and parents attended workshops in preparation for their Confirmation. The gifts of the Holy Spirit are already at work!

Dance and Drama News
Year 5 Drama
The art of improvisation, is a skill all actors need to learn and develop. The Year 5 students have been learning the skills involved in spontaneous and prepared improvisations in Drama. They are given characters and scenarios and they are to get up on the spot, without thinking too much and come up with a drama scene exploring the given idea. We have had a lot of fun in this unit and have also faced many challenges that come along with improvisation.
