A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
This week is Teacher Appreciation Week, a time we recognize the hard work our teachers do each and every day. Here at Frank Wagner we are blessed to have one of the most dedicated, caring and courageous staffs I have ever been a part of. I know you have all noticed the dramatic changes to instructional practices that our teachers have embraced this year. Their commitment to raising the level of their instruction was not without a lot of long hours, weekends away from families and willingness to continually make themselves open to feedback and coaching. They amaze me each and every day. Thank you for joining me in recognizing their efforts this week and throughout the year.
May also brings state required testing via the Smarter Balanced Assessment. Students in grades 3-5 will be tested in both English Language Arts (Reading & Writing) and Mathematics. 5th graders will also be tested in science. These tests are given throughout the state and are one measure of student progress toward meeting the Common Core State Standards. These tests do not give teachers information that can be used for targeted instruction, instead, teachers utilize a variety of other school and district based assessments that influence daily instruction. State tests are important but here at Frank Wagner we choose to place the same, if not greater importance in the assessments we administer throughout the year. For that reason, we will not be giving special snacks or changing our schedules for the Smarter Balanced Assessments. It is important that on these testing days students have excellent attendance, get a good night's sleep, eat a healthy breakfast and come ready to learn, but we believe those are habits and practices that our students need each and every day, not just on a testing day. Thank you for ensuring your child comes ready to learn every day. Specific state testing dates are listed below for your reference.
As the weather gets warmer and summer plans begin to be made, we often see students get a bit more restless. Please help students stay focused on learning by maintaining healthy routines and communicating the importance of being ready to learn each day.
We hope to see you around school this month. There are lots of field trip opportunities, our daily Parent Partnership Lunch visits, and May 16th is our next literacy celebration and school BBQ lunch day. Can't wait to see you!

TRANSPORTATION TIDBITS
If your child misses the bus, do not pull up behind the bus at another stop and let your child run up the side of the bus from the rear. This is very unsafe. Please go to the last stop on the route and drop your child there to catch the bus, or call Transportation and let them know you are behind the bus so the bus driver is aware that you are there.
Spring is in the air! The temperature is going up outside and inside the buses! Please remind your student that windows are only to be down 2 (two) notches for safety. No arms, other body parts or items are to be out the window.
