Research Question

Does the amount of salt in water affect how high a raw egg will float when it is placed inside the cup of water?

Predictions

We predict that the more salt is in the cup of water, the higher the egg will float. We also predict that the egg will float the highest in the cup of water with the most salt.

Independent Variable

The amount of salt in the water would be our independent variable. The amount of salt in the water will affect how well the raw egg would float. There will be cups of water that will contain no salt, 2 tablespoons of salt, and 5 tablespoons of salt.

Dependent Variable

The dependent variable is the measure of the height in centimeters the egg reaches to once it is placed in the different cups of water.

Set-Up Conditions

The amount of water in each cup, the size of the cup, and the size of the eggs will stay constant.

Directions

First, we are going to fill up 3 clear plastic cups with a measured cup of water. Second, we will add 2 tablespoons of salt in one cup and 5 tablespoons of salt in another cup and stir them. Next we will drop a raw egg in each plastic cup. We will observe to see how the eggs float differently in each cup. We will then mark on the cup the location of where the egg floats up to. We will then measure with the ruler the height of the mark on the cup. We will write down the measurements and compare the difference. We will repeat the experiment 9 more times.

Materials

We will need the following materials for the experiment:

  • Clear plastic cups
  • Raw eggs
  • Measuring cup
  • Water
  • Salt
  • Measuring spoon
  • Ruler
  • Marker

Results

The raw egg didn't float a lot in the cup of water with no salt. The raw egg floated a little bit in the 2 tbs of salt. The raw egg floated the highest in 5 tbs of salt.

Explanation

The salt has affected the raw egg to float. This is because the salt functions the egg in the water to get more hight and begins to float.

Real World Uses

In an ocean a fisherman has salt and water and has a buoy... the salt in the ocean will help the buoy float without sinking.

The End!

Thanks for watching are eggscellent experiment! Are predictions were true the raw egg floated in the cup of salt water with 5 tbsp. of salt.
