"La familia lo es todo"
Family Structure
- most rural families live with extended family
- cousins are as close as siblings and can be referred to as primos hermanos (cousin siblings)
-more urban families generally live with immediate family although grandparents are often present
Interesting fact
family members who work away send money to extended family for expenses that they aren't even associated with
Child/parent relationship
- in poorer families, children must work
-most children are responsible for chores around the home
- adult children are responsible for caring for their elderly parents
Gender roles
-father is generally the head of the family
- wife typically controls the household
- most of a woman's social status is based on marriage
