WHS Mourns the Passing of Beloved Counselor
Weehawken High School Staff and students were once again subject to tragedy, as beloved Guidance Counselor Ciara Ziek passed away suddenly after a brief illness. Mrs. Ziek, had been a counselor in Weehawken for 24 years at the time of her passing. Countless lives were touched by the witty and charming Mrs. Ziek, was love of children was only matched by her rapier wit. Over the years several thousand WHS students and their families were counseled for not only educational purposes, but many times personal and familial concerns. She was an indispensable part of the staff, who will be missed greatly. Mrs. Ziek leaves behind two loving children of her own, and countless other WHS students. Rest easy Chiara...Thanks for Everything!
Media Center Overhaul Complete
Gone are the days of dusty unused tomes, and uncomfortable carrels. Instead students can sit in a college level learning atmosphere that falls in line with the needs of the 21st century learner. The room has been so well received that many students have requested more classes be offered there for next school year. Happy students learning; another example of the extra steps taken at WHS to foster a positive learning environment.
WHS Offers Piano as a Class
Led by Donna Hochauser, the 27 students enrolled work on electronic keyboards, pecking away at the ivory to the likes of Beethoven and Mozart. The intent of including this new option is to offer a diverse range of options for all of our students to choose from, and provide another reason to enjoy school.
WHS Initiates Operation AESOP
On Friday, October 26, Mr. Perry’s 7th Grade Honors Social Studies class travelled a few blocks to the Roosevelt School as a part of Operation: AESOP.
Operation: AESOP is a class-wide project done as a part of their exploration of Ancient Greece. Much like Aesop, this class wrote fables with animal characters to pass along lessons learned at WHS. The audience was Ms. Boshell’s 6th Grade class at TRS. Perry's charges read their fables to the class, and then opened the floor for a Q & A session to the TRS students about their experiences so far at WHS. The next phase of the project is assembling these fables into an anthology.
Operation: AESOP was inspired by our class discussion of Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave”, where the highest calling of learning is sharing it with others for the betterment of themselves and the community. The class was also guided by the memories of Mr. Colasurdo and Ms. Ziek, who constantly sought to soothe the transition of our younger students into our WHS family. This project is dedicated to their memory.
