Principal's Message

Dear Parents and Guardians of the PAWSOME PUMAS,

I want to share on behalf of the entire Prairie Family how grateful we are to have the opportunity to educate and nurture your children each and every day. I can not believe how fast the time is flying this school year. We have continually worked together to C.L.I.M.B. the Mountain of Success. The time has come for us to bring a close to the 2017 school year. Celebrations that I would like to highlight over the last year include but are not limited to:

School-Wide Growth on the MAPs and Forward Exam

Prairie's 50th Celebration

The Eye Of The Puma

Puma Palooza

Halloween Dance

Creation of our First Legacy Tree

Implementation of a College and Career Ready School-Wide Focus

We could not have accomplished any of this alone. Our school culture and community is growing because of the dedication we have to ensure that every scholar in our school is successful. The educators at Prairie would like to extend a warm thank you for the gifts and demonstrations of gratitude from you and members of our school community. We wanted to share with you that the greatest gift that you give us are your children. Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!

Please enjoy the holiday season, and we look forward to welcoming in the 2018 school year with you when we return to school on Tuesday, January 2nd.

Happy Holidays and Happy New Year to everyone. We are looking forward to more fun PTA activities starting in the New Year.

January Events:

Restaurant Night: Monday, January 8th 5-8 p.m. at Culver’s on Sunset. Come join your Prairie friends at Culver's. The flavor of the day will be Mint Chip.

PTA Meeting: Tuesday, January 9th 6:30p.m. in the Prairie library. Join us as we hear from Principal Griffin and discuss other PTA business. Free childcare is available for school aged children from Red Cross Certified Babysitters. Tune in on Facebook Live if you cannot attend in person.

Science Night – Fire and Ice: Friday, January 12th 6:30p.m.-7:30p.m. Children will be dazzled and entertained as they interact with our Mad Scientists! Foggy dry ice storms, giant beach balls floating in the air and even a special Mad Science “burp” potion will amaze children as they learn about chemical reactions, air pressure and the states of matter.

Collections: The next deadline is February 2nd. Congratulations to Mrs. Winkler’s 4th grade class who brought in the most collections items this month and will get to host Puma Claws in their classroom. Congratulations as well to Mrs. Ferguson’s class who won a pajama day and Mrs. Dugan’s class who won a crazy hair day. The top classroom for collections for the entire 2017-18 school year will get to turn Mr. Griffin into Pikachu at Puma Palooza on Sat. May 5th!

Looking ahead:

Art & Talent Showcase on Fri. 3/9 (new date): Prairie students get a chance to show their stuff! Cheerleading, dancing, singing, playing instruments, comedy, magic, or for those less likely to get on stage, directing a Prairie commercial, drawing, sculpting or anything else you consider art. General guidelines are 2 minutes or less and no lip syncing. More information will come home shortly after Winter Break.

It's the time of year . . . lots of colds, sore throats and stomach viruses. Please see the link below for guidelines on when to keep your child home from school. You will be contacted from our health room staff if your child runs a fever over 100 degrees or has vomiting/diarrhea at school. We ask that they be symptom free for 24 hours without medication before returning to school.

Too Sick for School

Attendance Letters

Please note that you may be receiving attendance letters from our office if your child has been tardy more than ten times or absent for any or all of five or more days. These letters are automatically generated through our Infinite Campus Student Enrollment System. We do encourage you to get a medical excuse from your child's physician/dentist if you have appointments or if they have been seen and recommended to be out of school for a certain period of time. These absences classified as medical do not count in the days that can be excused by parents. Attendance can be viewed in your Infinite Campus Parent Portal at any time.

In District School Choice

The In District School Choice enrollment period opens today, December 1, 2017 and closes at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, January 22, 2018. If you are considering having your child attend a school within the District that is not your neighborhood school, you must complete an In-District Transfer/School Choice Request. If you are interested in more than one school, please fill out a separate application for each school that you are requesting.

Here is the link to the District website detailing the procedures and important dates. There is a link there for online submission of your application as well.

New School Website

The district is transitioning Prairie to a new website which will align with the district website and other schools. Click here for the link to the new website. If you have previously bookmarked our website, please do so again with the new link. We ask for your patience as this is a time-consuming process for our office and district staff to update and move information.

Inclement Weather

Our District Superintendent, Mr. Gray, has issued a statement regarding the decision making process on whether or not to close school during winter inclement weather. Please click here to read his letter. The district will update their website as soon as possible when weather conditions warrant a school closing.

Lunch Accounts

A letter was sent home last week to all families with the policy regarding negative lunch accounts. Each child can "charge" up to 2 meals, up to a negative balance of $4.20. If money is not brought in for a meal, they will only have the option to charge a cheese sandwich and milk at a cost of $1.50. This policy will be enforced as of Monday, September 11, 2017. Click here for a copy of this policy.

Paying Fees in Infinite Campus

There is an updated process in Infinite Campus for paying school fees and putting lunch money on your account. Please click here to watch a video explaining the process. If you have any issues with logging into your account, please contact our office. Fees for the 2017-18 school year were posted to your child's account on August 1, 2017, and are now due. Any accounts with unpaid balances will be received statements in late October.
