Canby School District News
January 30, 2020
We certainly are back in the swing of things here in Canby School District. Our K-8 students are wrapping up their first semester. Thanks for your patience a week and a half ago with our delayed start. I recognize it is difficult to adjust schedules. The decision is always based on road conditions and the advice of the bus company regarding the safe transport of our students. I do my best recognizing the decision will never satisfy all. There is no school this Friday as our K-8 teachers work on grading and our 9-12 teams work on professional development.
Last week, the state released graduation rates for the 2018-19 school year. Canby School District has a graduation rate of 86.65% compared to the State rate of 80%. There is continued work to do. We continue to see an achievement gap between student groups, which is part of what the Student Success Act is designed to address. Our application for funds will include resources to help reduce the academic disparities among student groups. We must focus on ensuring that a student's success in school is not determined by circumstances beyond their control. Every student deserves the right to reach their full potential.
I am grateful for your partnership in your student's education. I encourage you to connect with your student's teacher if you have specific questions regarding the learning taking place in their classroom.
Best,
Trip Goodall

THANK YOU, CANBY SCHOOL BOARD!
We appreciate all that our Board Members do. Please join us in thanking Board Chair, Angi Dilkes; Vice Chair, Mike Zagyva; Stefani Carlson, Dawn Depner, Sara Magenheimer, Tom Scott, and Rob Sheveland.
Thank you, Canby School District Board of Directors!
Bond Development Committee
The next steps in the committee's process includes a community meeting and prioritizing projects by scope and cost.
The district facilities team identified a list of needed updates and upgrades. These projects would address issues with HVAC, roofs, and other infrastructure. They also include safety and security upgrades in our buildings.
The group planned to hold a community meeting on February 3, 2020, but needs more time to prioritize projects. We'll share future community meeting dates with you as soon as they're available.
The district must present the plan and application to the Board of Directors for approval before submitting to the state. There will be opportunities for public comment before the board about the plan in February and March. The plan will be presented to the Board for final approval on April 2.

FBLA Students Heading to State Competition
Canby's Future Business Leaders of America had an impressive showing at the state-qualifying tournament earlier this month.
FBLA focuses on business, leadership, and management. The state tournament will be held in Portland in April. The following students qualified to compete at state:
Families Reading Together
The books, offered in both English and Spanish, were funded by a generous grant from the Canby Educational Foundation. In addition, The Book Nook in Canby offered a deep discount to Knight Elementary to stretch those dollars even further.
Next month, Lee Elementary families will read their fifth "Book in Common." They'll read Beverly Cleary's The Mouse and the Motorcycle. Staff at both schools say it's great to hear all students talking about reading with their families.

The Dangers of Teen Vaping
Signs Youth Are Vaping
- Symptoms: Coughing, trouble breathing, chest pain, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain or fever after vaping could be serious. Seek medical attention right away.
- Equipment: Devices that look like flash drives, pods that contain e-juice (the flavored fluid that is used inside vaping devices), e-juice bottles or product packaging.
- Purchases: Online, packages in the mail, store purchases.
- Scent: Faint odor of flavoring (e.g., cotton candy, berry, mint, crème brûlée.).
- Increased thirst or nose bleeds: Some of the chemicals used in e-juices dry out the mouth and nasal passages. As a result, some kids drink more liquids or seem more prone to nose bleeds.
- Vaping lingo: text messages include “atty” for an atomizer, “VG” for vegetable glycerin found in e-juice, or “sauce” referring to e-juice.
- Social media: Pictures or videos on Instagram, YouTube or Twitter accounts.

Not only is vaping dangerous, it is illegal for anyone under 21-years-old. And the consequences for vaping can include a referral to law enforcement, Minor-in-Possession charges, as well as suspension, or expulsion, from school.
Please review the following from our Students' Rights and Responsibilities Handbook (page 19):
The possession or use of tobacco in any form by any person on school property or while attending school-sponsored activities is prohibited and is unlawful. A student who violates this policy shall be subject to disciplinary action, up to and including suspension or expulsion and may result in a referral to law enforcement officials. In lieu of taking a student to an expulsion hearing, the school may opt to make a referral to community resources and/or cessation programs designed to help the student overcome tobacco, alcohol or unlawful drug use will be made. The cost of such programs is the individual responsibility of the parent/student and the private health care system.
