April/May
Current Studies and Explorations- a message from Mrs. Rhodes and Mrs. Redmon
We cannot believe the year has flown by. Summer is just approaching in a few weeks. We have really enjoyed enriching your child's learning this school year.
In April, students learned about magnetism and LEGO WeDo (c) Robots. When studying with Mrs. Redmon, students discovered what a magnet was composed of, defined poles, & even discussed magnetic fields. We applied our discoveries to our learning. Students went on an adventurous scavenger hunt to find magnetic things in the world around them. With Mrs. Rhodes, students became the "experts" of their particular robot. The students started to discover the basics of their LEGO WeDo (c) Robots and began exploring with programming! They explored basic coding and computer science concepts and applied them in their investigations with robotics. Students have continued to use the scientific process throughout both units.
In May, students will apply all basic science skills acquired over the year in a culminating unit focused on observation & data collection. Mrs. Redmon will allow students to search for items in a Nature Scavenger hunt. Once items are collected, we will observe them using quantitative and qualitative observation skills. They will sketch their treasures using the "naked eye" and what it looks like under a microscope at 5x magnification. Many science skills will spiral through this unit to allow for students to apply what they have learned throughout the year in our gifted resource sessions.
We have truly enjoyed working with your children this year. We are honored to have been a part of their discoveries for their PK year. We hope they have an amazing summer!

Quick Summer Tip: Give your child a notebook that they can journal/sketch/keep recordings of what they have learned or discover this summer. Allow your child to bring it to the zoo or museums you attend. Pack it in their bag for vacation. You will be amazed at their wonder and discoveries they will want to document. Plus, it is a great memory and keepsake for your child to have of their discoveries.
