WILD ABOUT LEARNING

"Educating the whole child: mind, body and spirit!"

Principal Corner

Welcome 2019! It was wonderful seeing all the Bearkats this week following the winter break. I hope that each of you had a great holiday season and enjoyed the time with your family. It is hard to believe that there is one more week of the first semester. The first semester will come to a close on January 18th. We encourage all of our students to finish strong!

One way to help your child finish strong is ensuring they attend school every day. Lost instructional time impacts students in the classroom. Our attendance goal is 97% and we fell short of that goal during the last recording period at 95.2%. Please be sure that your child is on time and present each day unless they are ill.

Spelling Bee

Congratulations to William Choi-Kim, 5th grade student. William won first place in our campus Spelling Bee on December 12th. He will represent Black Elementary at the district Spelling Bee in February.

There were a total of 26 contestants in the Spelling Bee. Congratulations to all those who bravely participated and competed in this year's contest. It was an exiting contest due to all the amazing spellers!

Thank you, PTO

Thank you to our amazing PTO hospitality chairs, Natalie Sanchez and Elena Velasquez for the beautiful holiday signs and hot cocoa bar. We also appreciate all of you who donated all the delicious desserts. This was such a special treat and enjoyed by the entire staff. We appreciate your thoughtfulness!

We would also like to thank the PTO for their partnership with our Grinchmas Family NIght on December 7th. What a fantastic evening! This event wouldn't be possible without you. Thank you for volunteering to work at the event as well as your financial support!

School Safety

During the first semester, we practiced all of our safety drills which include: lockout, lockdown, fire drill/hazmat and shelter. Once the 2nd semester gets underway later in January, we will practice each drill again. The purpose of our drills is to build muscle memory so that in the event of an emergency, students and staff will know how to respond.

The district adopted a Standard Response Protocol from the I Love You Guys Foundation. Each drill has a specific purpose and common vocabulary of commands. We want our Bearkats to be prepared, not scared so we have taught lessons for each drill, practiced them and provided feedback following each drill.

At the beginning of the year, we sent home the Standard Reunification Method information. You can find the overview of components of the Standard Reunification Method below. In the event of a crisis on our campus, we would implement this reunification plan. Our primary reunification site is Goodson Middle School. CFISD would transport our students and staff to Goodson where you would be reunited with your child(ren). In the event that Goodson Middle School is unable to accommodate us during a crisis, our secondary reunification site is Cypress Woods High School. We will not practice the Standard Reunification Method with our students and staff but wanted you to be aware of this process.

School Zone

Harris County has installed the school zone sign on Spring Cypress which will help tremendously during arrival and dismissal. Thank you, again, for ensuring a safe arrival and dismissal for all families when you enter the car rider line by:

  • making a right turn only into the line from Spring Cypress
  • exiting the campus with a right turn only
  • ensuring your phone is put away
  • not entering the line from the HEB parking lot

If you arrive after 8:45, please come to the front of the school, park, and enter the building to sign your child in at the front desk. Please refrain from dropping students off at the front of the school prior to 8:45 as this is the bus loading/unloading zone.

Happy New Year! Our PTO is excited for the start of 2019!

We have so many fun events planned for our staff and students. These events include our Spring Dance Fundraiser on March 2nd, Cultural Arts events and staff appreciation. Our PTO could not provide all that we do for our staff and students without the support of our parents and volunteers. Thank you!

Our Spring Dance fundraiser is right around the corner, please look for more information to come home with your student soon! If you would like to volunteer to help with the dance, please contact Isis McCraw at fundraising@blackpto.net.

Our next PTO General meeting will be on February 12th at 9:30am. Join us to learn more about our PTO happenings and an update on our finances. For more important dates, please check our PTO calendar at MySchoolAnywhere.

Did you know? Our VIPS Coordinators, Tara and Alexis, along with the Grade Liaisons and Homeroom Coordinators spend many months planning the Holiday and End of Year parties. The party fees paid at the beginning of the year (or paid at anytime) fund these parties for our students. If you have not paid your party fees, it's not too late! Please contact Kayla Yates at membership@blackpto.net for more information.

Thank you to our PTO Board, PTO Committee Chairs, HRC's and all volunteers for your hard work in 2018! It's going to be a great 2019!
