Please note, there is a short video to watch regarding the unpacking of the approximately 50 boxes of books we will be working with tomorrow morning. :).
ALL staff will be engaged in working on this work. All hands on deck to make this as smooth a process as possible. The goal by the end of the morning:
- Clarity around student WIGs for the 2nd grading period.
- Clarity around team WIGs for the 2nd grading period. (all teams)
- Clarity around personal WIGs for the 2nd grading period. (all staff)
- Deeper understanding of Classroom Libraries.
- Unpacking and organizing of 50 boxes of books for classroom libraries.
First Lighthouse Leader Awards are October 18:
Reminders:
Friday, October 18 is our first Lighthouse Leader Awards Assembly of the year. I wanted to take a moment to remind returning staff and inform new staff of our campus practices for the student celebrations each grading period. I have done my best to capture everything below. If I missed something or something is still unclear, please let me know.
·
· Leadership Assembly and Lighthouse Leader Awards:
- Each homeroom will give out TWO Lighthouse Leader Awards recognizing two students who have exemplified the qualities of a leader for the grading period. Remember we moved to 2 per grading period because of the change to 9 week grading cycles.
- Parents of the students receiving the awards, will be sent a formal invitation in the mail and personal phone call inviting them to the awards ceremony. Paper invitations and envelopes in mailboxes Tuesday morning. These need to be turned in to the office no later than Friday, October 11 so they can be sent in the mail.
- Complete the Lighthouse Leader award using the link below so that the award certificate can be created for each student before Friday’s assembly.
- We will have an adjusted schedule for specials on this day:
Lighthouse Leader Awards Schedule:
- K-2 8:00 - 8:30
- 3-5 8:30 - 9:00
Lighthouse Leader Google Form Due Monday, October 14:
Habit Huddle Classroom Awards:
- Each homeroom has established a classroom culture and family over the last 9 weeks. Celebrations are an important part of continuing to foster this family and culture, while also filling emotional bank accounts. To honor the work and success from the grading period, each homeroom will have classroom celebrations during Habit Huddle on Lighthouse Leader Assembly days.
- The traditional awards (A honor roll, A/B honor roll, perfect attendance, etc.) will be recognized during this time.
- Each grade level team must be consistent in what awards are given during class Habit Huddle awards assemblies.
- The following Spirit Sticks are available for awards and can be found in the “drawer box” behind the front desk:
- Perfect Attendance
- A Honor Roll
- A-B Honor Roll
- Citizenship/Leadership:
- There are tags for specific habits that could be used for citizenship as well.
- Each student will need a ring to get started with. We will place rings in baggies and place them in teacher mailboxes next week.
- There are “brag tags” left over too. These are available on a first come first served basis. We will not reorder these.
- Should the drawer for a specific Spirit Stick be empty. There is not need to panic or be angry. Or be frustrated. Simply ask, and we will refill. If you take the last Spirit Stick, you might pay it forward and let someone know so that we can get the drawer refilled before causing anyone any undue stress.
- Please only take what you need. We will reorder if we run out.
More Details to Come About Staff Lighthouse Leaders!
The following will be sent to parents in a S'more. We will post this on the campus FB page and website as well. Please share with your parents so that they are informed:
"In order to honor the greatness in our Seven Hills Leaders, we offer classroom and grade level Lighthouse Leader Awards Assemblies. We honor students for attendance, honor roll, citizenship, and other grade level or classroom recognitions each grading period. These celebrations will happen in the classroom during Habit Huddle on designated grading period Lighthouse Leader Assembly days. Students will receive "Spirit Sticks" awards for their individual accomplishments. Following Habit Huddle, we will host grade level Leadership Assemblies, one for K-2 grades and another for 3 -5 grades. During these assemblies, two students from each homeroom class will be awarded the distinction of Lighthouse Leader. This award recognizes students who consistently demonstrate leadership qualities and use the 7 Habits to be a Star Leader. Parents of these students will be notified in advance so that they can make plans to attend the assembly. At the end of the year, we will have an awards assembly to honor students for the year of hard work, perseverance, and leadership. This assembly will include recognition of honor roll, attendance, etc. for the entire school year. Students and staff are encouraged to wear college colors (either a college t-shirt or the colors of their favorite colleges) to Leadership Assemblies, because we are beginning with the end in mind (Habit 2). We set goals for future success and see these celebrations as recognition of hard work to achieve our goals. We are excited about these opportunities to recognize the greatness in our Star Leaders!"

From Tanya:
Conflict resolution skills are good to teach all kids in your class at least once a month to keep the strategies fresh in kids minds, when students bicker, argue, and fight a lot, or when you lose time due to student conflicts and disagreements.
Tips for problem solving
- Think first to determine whether the action or behavior was on purpose or accident and whether there is a real threat or not.
- Try to talk out the difference, disagreement, or conflict
- If talking does not resolve the problem, then agree to disagree and walk away and stay away
- If you walk away and stay away but the problem continues or you think there is a real threat, then speak to an adult like the teacher
- Remember, sticks and stones, words are words.
- Remember, people say mean and cruel things that usually are not true to get you angry and upset. When you become angry and upset about these words, you have given the other person and acted the way the other person wants you to, giving them power and control over you. Don’t allow yourself to be a victim and choose not to get upset about words that are probably not even true. If you stay calm and ignore these words, you are in control and have power over the situation.
- No matter what, follow the golden rule: Treat others as you want to be treated. In other words, treat everyone like a friend even if they are mean and do not treat you well. Many people treat others how those people treat them, so if you treat everyone like a friend, they will eventually gain respect for you and treat you like a friend too.

From the Librarian:
Pumpkins can be turned in starting on Tuesday. Please talk about this event with your students. I have about 15 pumpkins to give away for students who may not be able to get one on their own. The Dollar Tree has them and I can get more if we need them. I also have printed papers with the info available.

Week A Library Schedule:
*Please do not send students for check in/out when I have a class or when the library is closed for lunch. It helps immensely if you check in your student’s books. If you aren’t able to, just send them down before your scheduled time and I will be happy to do it.

Campus Reminders and Updates:
Required Trainings Reminder: Don't forget to stop by the nurse to demonstrate your proficiency with the use of an Epi Pen. This is a component of the required training.
Reminder About Contract Time: Teacher contract time is 7:15 - 3:45. We extend that to 4:30 on Thursdays for staff meetings. We give back your time on Fridays by allowing staff to leave after dismissal is over. If you need to leave before 3:45, this should be discussed with Kim and staff should be signing out on the Google form when they leave campus. Thank you for your attention to this professional reminder.
Habit Huddle Connection:
When you practice Habit 7, you take time for yourself every day because it give you the ability to do everything else. How many of you put everyone or everything else before your self? That is the common paradigm...you are too busy to take time for you. Habit 7 is about preserving and enhancing the greatest asset we have...OURSELVES! Practicing habit 7 means you regularly renew the 4 dimensions of our nature:
- body
- mind
- heart
- spirit
This week I challenge you to find time to achieve a daily private victory by intentionally taking care of yourself. Here are a few suggestions:
- Take a walk
- Catch up with an old friend
- Spend time with your family
- Read a book
- Take a nap
- Watch a good movie
- Treat yourself to a mani-pedi
- Exercise
- Go to bed early
Before you hit a wall....Sharpen the Saw!
"There's no better way you could spend an hour that would begin to compare with the daily private victory in terms of value and results. It will affect every decision, every relationship. It will greatly improve the quality, the effectiveness, of every other hour of the day, including the depth and restfulness of your sleep." - 7 Habits Book -
