Mrs. Gavey's Classroom Update

December 22, 2016

Hello!

A BIG thank you to all of you for the wonderful gifts and treats! I LOVE the school supplies and gift cards the whole class gave me. I really need that new hot glue gun too! I feel very fortunate to be a teacher at Northwood and to be working with YOUR children each day. Have a restful vacation.

With much appreciation,

Mrs. Gavey

Curriculum

Math

We are now focusing on MEASUREMENT in math...but that doesn't mean that the math fact mastery has gone away! Students are seeing that those math facts everywhere in our new unit....so PLEASE keep studying!

Language Arts

Watching the movie Because of Winn Dixie was a pleasure! After break we will be wrapping up our thoughts about the book and movie by comparing them. Our next reading unit will focus on non-fiction text.

In writing, we are at the end of our study of personal narratives. We will be doing the post narrative on demand writing piece when we return. This is a chance for students to show what they now know how to do when writing a personal narrative. Students are given 45 minutes to write a piece independently. After these pieces are scored, your child will bring home his/her writing binder to share with you!

Social Studies and Science

Please email Mr. Donnellon(donnellonj@royaloakschools.org) for social studies concerns and Mrs. Fritz(fritzs@royaloakschools.org) for science concerns.

Word Study Update

Planner/ticket update

Each year at this time, I begin to wean the students off of the reward tickets I hand out. I usually give a ticket each day to each student who completely fills out his/her planner, reads 30 minutes, completes math homework, and gets a parent signature. I believe it is important to do these things each night as a way of developing personal responsibility skills. In order to keep it realistic, I begin to award tickets on a random basis in January. My thought behind this is that in the real world we are not constantly rewarded for doing the right thing, but rather we do it because we know we should! By choosing random days to award tickets, I hope to build a more intrinsic motivation for completing these nightly tasks.

I have explained this to the students, but any reinforcement you can give would be appreciated!
