Principal's Corner
Dear FSA Community,
I hope that everyone has enjoyed their weekend! Yesterday Fulton Science Academy sponsored a lunch and a dinner for the police officers and the fire marshals at the Alpharetta Department of Public Safety. We thank these heroes of our community for all always being there for our community! Thank you Alpharetta Department of Public Safety for all you do! We are beyond grateful for your service.
As we continue on with virtual school, we hope that you are all doing well. I am happy to hear from so many of you that the webinar, "Supporting Your Child Through the Pandemic" was so helpful for you all. I attended the webinar as well and found it very enlightening. We strive to provide not only our students, but our parents, with the support they need in this time as well. We look forward to being able to offer more events like this in the future. If you missed the webinar, a link was sent to you via email, if you would like to still view it.
In an effort to provide a well rounded experience for all of our families during this time, I'm excited to say that we are hosting a Family Fitness Night for all of our families this Wednesday! A link will be sent to families via email to join in on Zoom. There will also be some awesome giveaway prizes! More information on both of these fitness events are further below.

SUPPORTING YOUR CHILD THROUGH THE PANDEMIC | A Re-Cap
She encouraged them to live in the moment, and talk. This allows for proper explanations as to why we have to do some of the things we are doing like wearing masks, gloves and the need for social distancing. Allow them to express themselves, answer their questions and explain why we have to do some of the things that we are currently doing. It also helps with sudden adjustments as in this case suddenly moving from traditional school to online. These discussions will also help parents develop a routine with and for their kids that can also help with anxiety, uncertainty and quicker adjustments as needed.
Throughout the presentation she drew parallels that this situation for kids and parents is similar to grief or sudden loss. Since that is exactly what happened, "the normal" that everyone was accustomed to suddenly is no more. Thus the importance of having a loving environment, further ensures a sense of safety and provides some normalcy. By focusing on the positives, and “organizing not agonizing” you can have some control in a situation that you in truth have little control over. So focus on the positives and what you have influence and outcome over.
Virtual Athletics Banquet | Friday, April 24th via zoom

A TIME FOR KIDS | COMIC CRAZE
ELEMENTARY CLASSROOM HIGHLIGHTS
Each year our 3rd graders have a challenge to create a good or service to advertise and sell to their classmates and teachers during Market Day. Our 3rd grade team developed a plan to host this market day virtually! On Friday, April 17th 3rd graders "shopped" on their flipgrid market. Students were challenged to create a good or service and create an advertisement to share with their peers. Students viewed each other's advertisements and gave "thumbs up" for those they would purchase. If they chose to purchase, they left a video comment explaining why they chose to purchase that good or service. So many goods & services were available on this flipgrid market.... Sports Bandz - For Great Fanz, Origami Bookmarks, Fluffy Slime, Beaded Bracelets, Stress Balls, Face Painting, homemade hand sanitizer, Crafty Coasters, and so much more. Seems like we have some future entrepreneurs in 3rd grade!
Life Cycles in Action
Our Kindergarten students are learning about life cycles in their current science unit. Students have been observing (through Zoom) while their caterpillars turned into butterflies over the past few weeks. This week, they learned the difference between a moth and a butterfly and set their butterflies free!
First Grade Thanks Healthcare Heroes
First graders wrote letters to our healthcare heroes this week! Mrs. Hooper's neighbor is sending meals to hospitals, and asked for letters to be sent as well. Our 1st graders jumped at the request. Students worked with their families to create a letter and mail it to Mrs. Hooper. She will be helping to get this special mail to our healthcare workers to help show our appreciation for all they are doing during these times.
Pre-K Virtual Field Trip - Pete The Cat!
Friday, April 17th our Pre-K students had the opportunity to join a special viewing of Pete the Cat put on by The Center for Puppetry Arts! While we know our students would have LOVED to see the real thing in person, we were so excited for them to have the opportunity to join this special viewing event! Students were able to see clips from the puppet show Pete the Cat Feeling Groovy all about feelings, friendship, kindness, and FUN! Following the screening they also had a special Q&A with the puppeteers.

FSA'S FIRST EVER VIRTUAL MIDDLE SCHOOL TALENT SHOW WAS A HIT!
By way of a poll on the Zoom platform, students were able to vote among all of the performances over a quick 2 minute time frame.
There were numerous outstanding performances, but 2 stood out among the crowd. These performances belonged to 8th grader Shadi Karimifard and 7th grader Rathan Muruganantham who won 1st & 2nd place respectively!
Shadi performed "I Was Here" by Beyonce, accompanied by the piano. Shadi said of her performance choice, "The first time I actually ever heard this song was for the video for the #FSACares movement back a few years ago....I really miss the people at FSA and I never really had a chance to say goodbye to everyone so I just hope that I have a chance some time in the summer if this is all over, to just go and thank all the faculty and all the students and everyone."
Shadi's performance even moved some of her fellow classmates to tears. You can see a clip of Shadi's performance in Monday, April 20th's episode of Mustang News.
Rathan performed "Yesterday" by the Beatles, accompanied by a backing track.
Rathan said of his performance choice, "I saw a movie, ("Yesterday", 2019) on a flight to India and, the song is the work of The Beatles, and I heard this song in that movie and I liked the solo." When asked about singing in his free time, Rathan said that he "enjoys singing a lot."

ACT plans flexible schedule for summer tests, test-from-home for fall 2020
In order to allow as many students as possible to test while still respecting health and safety guidelines, ACT, Inc plans to employ what it refers to as “Flexible Scheduling.” According to the statement, this policy “will provide students with reschedule options—without change fees—for June 13th to June 20th and for July 18th to July 25th.” It’s unclear exactly what those options would be, or what ACT, Inc would achieve by delaying a test date for one week if the nation is still under quarantine conditions. It’s possible that the ACT will make decisions on a regional basis, allowing some states to test on the regular testing date and delaying others. We can expect the ACT to clarify their Flexible Scheduling policy as we get closer to the June test date.
In addition to Flexible Scheduling, ACT, Inc will be piloting an at-home test starting in late fall or early winter. ACT, Inc was in the midst of preparing for seismic changes in the way the ACT is administered – including a computer-based test administration – before COVID-19, but all of its changes still included specific testing sites. Those changes are still scheduled to take effect in September, but students will also have access to an at-home official ACT testing experience at some point in the fall semester. Today’s announcement didn’t go into detail about the testing platform, but stated that “the fee waivers ACT provides to students from low-income homes will apply to the at-home testing option, and ACT is considering other ways to address access and equity issues.”
The world of admissions testing has been a never-ending series of changes over the past few months and will likely continue to be so as we all navigate a new environment. We’ll keep you updated on further ACT developments as we learn of them."
