Newport Elementary School

Newport Elementary School is a Pre-K to fifth grade school serving the families of Newport Minnesota. Newport Elementary is part of the South Washington County Schools District 833. Please call the Main Office at 651-425-4301 with any questions. School day: 7:55am-2:25pm

PICTURE DAY!

Picture Day is Monday October 4th, 2021 and retakes will be Tuesday November 9th, 2021.

2021-2022 SCHOOL HOURS

Please do not drop off students before 7:30am


7:30am Breakfast begins and non-breakfast students report to classrooms


7:45am First morning bell indicating students should be getting to class.


7:55am Second morning bell indicating school has started.


10:35am-12:35pm Lunch and recess by grade level.


2:20pm First closing bell indicating students should be getting ready to pack-up.


2:25pm Second closing bell indicating the school day has ended.


2:30pm Regular education busses leave the parking lot.

The Newport Birthday Club means no need to buy cupcakes or treats!

All Newport Elementary students are enrolled in the Newport Birthday Club! Students will celebrate their birthday at a school-wide monthly assembly. The entire school will sing a happy birthday song to them and each birthday student will receive a book as a special gift.


No need to buy birthday treats or cupcakes. All birthday treats are prohibited based on our District's Wellness guidelines and as a precaution to allergy exposure.

Newport Title 1 School

Newport is a Title One School


South Washington County Schools (SoWashCo) offers a Title I program that meets the needs of the children at individual schools. At some buildings, this may mean that selected students receive assistance during the regular school day either in their classrooms or in another location within the school. Generally, students work individually or in small groups with a teacher or a trained instructional assistant.

  • Do all schools have a Title I program? No. Federal guidelines require that Title I programs are available in schools with the greatest concentration level of low-income families. Once a school qualifies, academic need - not economic status - determines whether students are eligible to receive extra instruction.

  • Who are Title I students? Title I students are students who will succeed when given some extra instruction. The students are identified by their classroom teachers as needing additional help in reading and/or math based on their test scores and academic performance. Those who show the greatest educational need and are not receiving special education services are served first.

Transportation and Busses

Call the District 833 Transportation office at 651-425-5303 for all questions and requests for bussing. Remember that students can not ride a different bus or get off at a different bus stop without permission from Transportation. Hand written notes given to the bus driver, school office, or the child's teacher will not be accepted. Change in bus plans must be made in advanced and approved through the Transportation Department. Please see the document below for more information.

Newport Elementary School testifies at State Capitol meeting on academic success!

Senator Carla Nelson selected Newport Elementary School to testify to the E-12 Education Committee hearing at the State Capitol regarding schools who are "Beating the Odds". Senator Nelson used academic data to select 13 schools around the state who have performed higher in reading scores despite their economic challenges. This is a tremendous honor to our teachers, staff, students, and Newport families.


Principal Rich Romano and Associate Superintendent Kristine Schaefer presented what strategies have been working and how teachers, staff, and families have supported Newport kids. Both Senators Karla Bigham and Susan Kent also attended the hearing to lend their support and appreciation to Newport Elementary School and the Newport Community.

Volunteers and Field Trip Chaperones

Parents due to the Covid 19 crisis all Volunteers in the schools have been postponed until further notice. At this time the District 833 elementary schools will be unable to have volunteers help out at the school.


In October we transitioned to a new visitor/volunteer management system. Thank you to those that have already create a new profile or transferred their old one. Here is a reminder on how to do these:

A $5 background check is required for chaperoning a field trip, volunteer academic/athletic coaching and any volunteer opportunity that a volunteer would be alone with students. These background checks are now good for two years and our volunteer management system will remind volunteers when it’s close to expiration.

If you will be volunteering in a capacity that does not require a background check, please still create a volunteer profile.
