YES Parents,
I think we are all amazed to realize that the end of the school year is almost here.
Our school will have very few changes for next year, but we will have a few new faces. Catina Day will be leaving our school to move to Birmingham, and Kimberly Fugatt will be moving to Fort Payne. In addition, a long time YES Teacher, Kimberly Roberts will be retiring from Auburn City Schools. Our school will greatly miss all three of these incredible educators.
While the summer is a great time for kids to relax and recharge – I want to also encourage our parents to keep students academically focused to avoid the “summer slump." Spending a few minutes each day working on math facts as well as reading chapter books (alone or with a parent) really helps our students stay connected to school. Parents of 4th graders - please be looking for our Summer Reading and Math Cards coming home soon. Our students will be excited to join us for our celebrations for completed cards when they return in August.
Have a great summer,
Pete Forster

After School Openings for Upcoming Fifth Graders
The After- School Program is a wonderful way to develop personal and interpersonal social skills. Recreational and physical activities are offered to develop physical skills so children can constructively channel their energy at the end of a school day. A variety of activities are offered. For example, students may play upper- level board games, participate in crafts, computer time, or building with Legos and Rube Goldberg kits. Students may attend clubs offered to Yarbrough students and join After-School afterward the club meets. A snack is served daily, and students receive homework help. For more information please email Janeane Barrett, Yarbrough After-School Coordinator. jwbarrett@auburnschools.org

Last Week Fun!
The last two days of school will include some of our favorite Yarbrough traditions. On Monday, we will have our last Nine Weeks Celebration with Wacky Water Rotations. Then on Tuesday we will have Field Day, which will also be water filled. To make sure that your student is prepared, please make note:
- Students can wear bathing suits. Girls should wear a shirt and shorts over their suits and boys should wear a shirt with their swim shorts.
- Students should bring a change of clothes to wear after the water activities. Don’t forget undergarments.
- Students should bring a towel and sunscreen.
- Students can only participate if a change of clothes is brought to school.
Summer Family Book Club
Hatchet by Gary Paulsen is our Summer Family Book Club book! A review of the book says, "This award-winning contemporary classic is the survival story with which all others are compared—and a page-turning, heart-stopping adventure, recipient of the Newbery Honor. Hatchet has also been nominated as one of America’s best-loved novels by PBS’s The Great American Read."
You can order your own copy of Hatchet from Mrs. Brandt for $1.00 (deadline May 9th). We will meet to discuss the book shortly after school begins in August.

Art Action with Mr. Daniel
The YES Art Dept. is putting the icing on the cake of another extraordinary year at Yarbrough! Below are some of the things we're working on:
Fourth Grade Artists:
We're exploring the wonderful world of proportion and complementary colors in the project-"These Are A Few Of My Favorite Things." We're exploring how objects that appear to be ordinary can be rendered to appear extraordinary when you exaggerate their proportions. We'll also explore the works of Rene' Magritte.
Fifth Grade Artists:
These young artists will utilize the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design to do a re-imagining of Claude Monet's "Cliff Walk at Pourville." We'll call our version-"Food By The Sea." Our version will revolve around a giant item of food that's sitting on a hill-side, watching the beautiful sunset. We'll also explore the works of Claude Monet, as well as Salvador Dali.
"Creativity Takes Courage."

Have a Safe and Fantastic Summer!!!
Computer Lab Latest with Miss Ball
The Counseling Connection with Mrs. Walsh
Our school year is drawing to a close, and summer is on the way. Please encourage your students to finish their year to the best of their abilities. As the last day approaches, take a few minutes to reflect with your children on their year. Challenge them to recall their favorite memories as well as the things they wish to change for next school year. Goal setting is important as it helps to raise self-esteem.
Please remind your children that they still need to get a good night's sleep to be their best every day. Some may need a reminder to bathe daily as the weather is warming up. And we all could be reminded of the Golden Rule: Treat others the way you want to be treated.
Our last lessons in Guidance will focus on summer safety and transitioning into the next school year, especially for our 5th graders, as they will attend Drake in the fall.
Please talk with your children about safety issues concerning peer pressure, being home alone and online safety.
Thank you for allowing me to serve as your school counselor.

Media Center Memo with Mrs. McGilberry
This nine weeks we have been prepping for the author visit. The fifth graders have been reading Problim Children and the fourth graders have been reading Snicker of Magic. The students all seem very excited about her arrival on Monday, May 6th.
The Music Message with Mrs. Oprandy
All Yarbrough students have been working hard to prepare for our upcoming music program, “We’re Making Music!” They’ve been playing the recorder, ukulele, rhythm instruments and barred instruments, along with working on their rapping and body percussion techniques. They have also practiced singing in a round, singing different melodies at the same time to create harmony, and singing a partner song. I hope you will join us May 14th at your child’s assigned performance time to enjoy all the different ways Y.E.S. students have been making music this year.
Venture Visit with Mrs. Roberts
As we end our school year, we will be playing several different critical-thinking and problem-solving games that will challenge the children and help them realize that teamwork is always important. We will start with a game called Game 24 where students will utilize their math skills. Mancala will be the next game where students will have to strategically plan. Logic Links will have our students using their listening skills to solve puzzles. Lastly, we will play Spot the Difference, a game of observation.
We have had a great and fun year. I appreciate all the parents that I have worked with and children that I have taught throughout the years. Sometimes we forget the impact that we have as teachers because schools are such busy places and teachers are such busy people. It is rare that we have a chance to stop and reflect on the influence that we have daily on the young people in our care. Thank you for 27 great years of teaching!
