SECONDARY FLEXIBLE CONFERENCES
Flexible Conferences are on March 13th, there is no school that day. Communication home at the Secondary Building will continue to be individual contacts to families regarding their students’ progress. If you would like to meet with a teacher at a specific time, please contact that teacher. This is a good time to check student grades in Skyward before the end of the trimester to encourage them to make any final improvements.
HAT'S IN THE BUILDING
Over the course of the last two school years, I have had many students who have advocated that they should have the opportunity to wear a hat in the building. We have been meeting with student groups and staff regarding the issue to gain more feedback. We do not believe that students who wear hats are doing it out of disrespect, and after a lot of research on the topic the etiquette expected out of those who choose to don hats has changed dramatically over time. After all things have been considered, students will be allowed to wear hats in the building as we pilot this for third trimester and determine if we want to make a permanent change.
Students will be required to follow the dress code, and hats that are inappropriate we will ask to be removed. If hats become a distraction staff may ask students to remove them. If a hat is pulled down so we can’t see a student’s eyes, a staff member may ask a student to lift it up. Ultimately I am going to ask students to help police this, because if hats are taken off of people’s heads and tossed regularly we would likely end the pilot of wearing hats in the building. We will still ask our staff to not wear hats as professionals.
This will go into effect for third trimester as students return to school on Tuesday, March 14th.
BACKPACKS
School safety is of the utmost importance to our school staff, and we have concerns about the ability to bring in items to the school we don’t want in the school with a backpack. We are going to ask students to please put their backpack in their locker. If that becomes a constant request of a student, we will confiscate and place in the office. If there is an exception that must be made in advance administratively and those will be granted rarely. While we are giving a little on hats, we are going to become a little more strict with backpacks and would appreciate parents reminding their student of this.
