Raureka School Term 3 Week 1
Newsletter 27 July 2022
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Kia ora koutou katoa, Talofa lava, Kia orana,
Welcome back to Term 3, we are hoping for a great term with very few interruptions to our school programme.
We have a busy term with Barefoot 7's and 10's Rugby, Netball, Football, Hockey, Tohea Trophy, Enduro Run, Cross Country, Intermediate School visits, Cook Island language Week and of course our Production.
Wednesday Hockey
I have sent out Hockey information notices to children who want to play this year. The season starts on Wednesday 7th September and finishes on Wednesday 7th December. All games will be held at Unison Park after school on Wednesdays. We will have two grades, if we have enough children, Yr3/4 and Yr 5/6. Children will need to have their own hockey stick, mouthguard, shin pads black shorts and socks.
The cost is $35 for the Year 3/4 Grade and $45 for the Year 5/6 Grade. Parents will need to get children to and from Unison Park each week.
I need to know by Wednesday 3rd August who wants to play so I can register the teams.
Front Fence
Our front fence is getting closer and closer to completion- hopefully by the end of next week.
Hall Screen
We were fortunate to have purchased a new larger screen for the hall- thank you all for supporting this by buying doughnuts, attending the disco and supporting the mufti days we have held.
A huge thank you as well to all of the parents who attended the Three Way Conferences last term- the contact between you and your child's teacher is really important. Remember if you have a query please contact the teacher first so this can be dealt with quickly.
A note from the MOE and MOH
In previous years we have found there is an increase in winter illnesses in schools at the start of Term 3 as students bring back infections after travelling and socialising during the holidays. This year cases of COVID-19 are increasing in most parts of the country, and we are also seeing high numbers of other winter illnesses.
For the start of Term 3, 2022, the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health strongly recommend that all schools and kura wear masks for the first four weeks of term especially wearing them in all indoor settings for students in Years 4 and above.
This recommendation does not include any situation where mask wearing might not be practicable, such as while eating and drinking, playing certain musical instruments, indoor sport, where it will have a significant impact on teaching and learning (for example, students with particular learning needs), certain activities such as singing or drama performance on stage, and PE. In these situations, particular attention should be paid to ensuring there is good ventilation during the activity, and physical distancing where practicable.
Wearing masks can reduce new cases of the virus by as much as 53%. It works alongside other measures including vaccination, good ventilation, staying home when sick, and hand washing and other hygiene measures, to protect our students and staff. Keep up healthy habits – Unite Against COVID-19
Adult-sized masks can generally be adjusted to fit older children by tying knots in the ear loops. Unite Against COVID-19 shows how to do this: How to wear a face mask safely – Unite Against COVID-19
We know that that some of our tamariki/ākonga are exempt from wearing a mask. If they have an exemption card or a letter from their health provider, or we have agreed that mask wearing is not practicable for them, we will support them to not wear a mask. Apply for a face mask exemption pass – Unite Against COVID-19
Please make sure that tamariki/ākonga come to school ready to wear masks. Students should bring masks from home. If students cannot bring masks from home there will be a limited supply of masks for students who are unable to bring one from home.
Thank you for your support in protecting our school community.
IMPORTANT - If your child is away from school -
Reminder that you need to PHONE OR TEXT the school know if your child is going to be away. Because of the current covid situation, it is essential that you let us know the reason they are away - eg coughing, headache, tummy bug etc.
You can phone 06 8789766 or text 027 557 0085 and leave a message.
Thank you for this, it is so helpful and we want to ensure your child is okay.
BOT Elections:
You will have seen a few app notices about this over the last few weeks. Please note an error was made with the dates for nominations closing- we were advised by NZSTA that it was 5th August- they have amended it to Wednesday 3rd August.
More information will be coming out about this regularly.

Other Notices
School Uniform – this is compulsory. No exceptions.
All children are required to have the school royal blue polo-shirt, royal blue hat, and on colder days the royal blue polar fleece jersey. All of these are available at the school office.
The lower half of the uniform (short, longs, skorts, skirts) must be plain black and can be purchased in town No stripes, no flowers etc, can
be purchased in town.
· Do your child’s records need updating?
- moved house?
- phone/cellphone numbers changed?
- living arrangements changed?
- emergency contacts changed?
- medical details?
Medical Reminders
IMPORTANT: Children are NOT to carry any form of medication in their bags etc. All medication must be held in the office. Parents must complete a Medical Form to enable staff to administer medication.
We often have a few ‘bugs’ around the school.
· A common one is a nasty cough/flu type illness. Keep your children home if they have symptoms of this as it spreads easily.
· If your child has had vomiting or diarrhoea, they MUST stay home for 2 days after the last event. This illness definitely spreads quickly around the school.
· Headlice are always around so make sure that you check your child’s hair regularly (we suggest weekly) and treat the hair if necessary. We have treatments available from school for free. Just pop in and we can give you some.
· If your child is at all unwell, please keep them home so that they don’t pass bugs on to other children. Also if a child is feeling unwell they are not able to learn easily and are much better off at home snuggled up in bed.
Don’t forget to contact the school office to let us know when your child is unwell please.
Volunteers needed for supervision of our school patrollers.
The children are well trained, it is just a matter of having an adult supervise from 8.30-9.00. Please contact Chris in the school office if your are able to help (even if you have helped in the past, please confirm).
Launch Pad - every Wednesday 12.30-1.00pm
This starts this Wednesday for any Y4-6 students. It will be held in the hall. All Welcome!
Covid Information
Covid19
Covid19 -We are at Orange level Orange now. We are seeing that cases are declining due to high levels of vaccination and natural immunity after infection.
At Orange, face masks are no longer required at school. However public health advice is that masks continue to be strongly encouraged when indoors. Wearing a mask is a key health measure that slows the spread of COVID-19 in indoor settings. For that reason, we ask that visitors to the school, including parents and whānau, wear a mask whenever they are indoors on school grounds.
We also ask that your child (if they are Year 4+) continues to bring a mask to school every day. There may be times that we’ll ask them to wear a mask, too – for example, when we are having an assembly in the hall. If there are a high number of cases at school or in the community, we may ask that masks are worn in classrooms for a time.
We will continue to keep all the other health measures in place at school that we know slow the spread of COVID-19. These include ensuring our indoor spaces are well-ventilated, maintaining good hand hygiene and cough and sneeze etiquette, appropriate physical distancing whenever we can and, most importantly, staying home if we are sick.
Remember if your child is feeling sick please keep them home until they are well.
If your child does need to isolate either as being a household contact or for testing positive please let us know.
Symptoms of COVID-19:
- A new or worsening cough
- Sneezing and runny nose
- A fever
- Temporary loss of smell or altered sense of taste
- Sore throat
- Shortness of breath
Less common symptoms include diarrhoea, headache, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, malaise, chest pain, abdominal pain, joint pain, or confusion/irritability.
We know how hard the impacts on COVID-19 have been for many families in New Zealand. If you know of a family in your community who is struggling, please encourage them to reach out for support for example to access food, medicine, or access financial support: Help is available – COVID-19 Health Hub.
If you have any concerns, please do get in touch. We are here to help.
