What is Neurofibromatosis?

Neurofibromatosis is a genetic disorder of the nervous system. It affects how nerve cells form and grow. It causes tumors to grow on nerves. Neurofibromatosis is a mutation of the genes and it is passed down from your parents. Men and women are affected equally.


Neurofibromatosis has several symptoms. They include tumors all over your body, freckling in the armpits, and light brown spots on the skin. People can also have bone deformaties, and learning disabilities. In daily life, if you are affected by neurofibromatosis, people may look at you differently and have weird symptoms. The life expectancy of people with neurofibromatosis is almost normal.


Condition 1 is characterized by changes in skin coloring and the growth of tumors along nerves int he skin. Type 2 chromosome, hypothesized to be a recessive tumor suppressor. The gene that is mutated is called the NF1 gene.


There is no treatment for neurofibromataosis. the doctors can treat your symptomas but it can not be cured. if you have a child they need to be treated as early as possible because they can get it if there partents have it. there is no cure at all.
