History of Modern Dance

Modern dance began in the United States in the 20th century. It took off when many choreographers began to rebel against the two main styles of dance. Loie Fuller, Isadora Duncan, Ruth St. Denis, and Ted Shawn are considered to be the pioneers of modern dance.

Ohad Naharin

Ohad Naharin was born in 1952 in Kibbutz Mizra. Raised in an artistic home, he wrote stories, composed music, and painted as a child. Although his mom was a dance teacher he did not start dancing until he was 22. Naharin developed a type of technique called Gaga. In his technique, he has a series of words that signify particular ways to initiate movement and the parts of the body involved in initiating and feeling that movement.
