Assessment for Learning

Enhancing Instruction for Student Academic Improvement

Teaching Learning and Leading in the 21st Century

Assessment in the classroom setting must give rise to students taking ownership of their learning and understanding how to learn, rather than just what to learn. In other words, it must be personal in nature (Newman, 2013).

5 Strategies for Successful Implementation of Assessments

Strategy 1

Clarifying, Understanding, and Sharing Learning Intentions

-Students have a mutual understanding of the learning goals

Strategy 2

Engineering Effective Classroom Discussions, Tasks and Activities that Elicit Evidence of Learning.

-Students are engaged in rich dialogue of the classroom material by reflecting on the work within the classroom

Strategy 3

Providing Feedback that Moves Learners Forward

-Students thinking is challenge as their encouraged to think further and support their findings with sound logic and reasoning

Strategy 4

Activating Students as Learners

-Students are encouraged to use their cognitive skills to investigate the learning in a meaningful and practical way

Strategy 5

Activate Students as Owners of their own Learning

-Students are encouraged to seek further into research and through in depth study

Formative and Summative Assessments

FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT

In short, formative assessment is used to inform future practice. Its goal is to improve teaching and learning. An assessment is considered formative when its information is fed back into the system and improves performance in some way. It is given during the instructional process and is immediately used to make adjustments to form new learning . Formative assessment is arguably the most significant type of assessment because it is used to inform learners and teachers about the progress students are making and about the next steps in the learning process (Newman, 2013).

SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT

in contrast to formative assessment, the purpose of summative assessment is to determine a student's overall achievement level in a specific area of learning at a particular time. Summative assessments provide a summary of the information that students know, understand, or can do.

REFLECTIONS

Teaching Learning and Leading in the 21st Century is progressively evolving in its presentation of education and the knowledge obtained by students through the effective and innovative teaching of instructors. Students are asked to channel their own thinking by formulating ideas, thought patterns reflection to dig deeper into their studies and theory. The education system is vastly changing its view on teaching and learning, students are more engaged and collaborative in the 21st Century than in times past.

The learning environments are not solely based on traditional text books but its impacted by the use of technology, webinar and other forms of communication and information gathering. The learning Assessments will greatly impact the classroom by taking away structure and replacing it with authenticity, curiosity and investigation, this model will change our world as students pioneer into the future.
