Immobilization Splinting Day 1

This is a full day splinting workshop featuring 5- 6 immobilization orthoses. The workshop format includes power point presentation on the principles of orthotic fabrication with discussion of indications for splinting and characteristics of splinting materials. The lecture will be followed by demonstration of splints and hands on splint lab time. Attendees will earn 0.8 CEU's and each fabricate five unique orthoses from Orfit materials. ​

Day 1 includes:

Lectures: Principles of Orthoses for Immobilization

Demonstration and fabrication:

· Circumferential Wrist Orthosis

· Anti -Spasticity Orthosis

· Resting Hand Orthosis

· Elbow Orthosis

· Short Thumb Opponens Orthosis


Mobilization Splinting Day 2

This is a full day advanced splinting workshop featuring 4 mobilization orthoses including dynamic and static progressive designs. The workshop format includes a power point presentation on the principles of mobilization splinting followed by demonstration and hands on splint lab time. Attendees will earn 0.8 CEU's and make four advanced orthoses incorporating wires, coils and Orfitube outriggers.

Day 2 includes:

Lecture: Principles of Orthoses for Mobilization Demonstration and fabrication:

· Composite Finger Flexion Orthosis

· Extensor Outrigger Orthosis (Orfitubes)

· Wrist Extension Assist Orthosis.

· Finger and Thumb Orthoses (yoke, mallet, boutonniere, anti- swan, CMC, trigger finger- time permitting)


Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course(s), participants will be able to:

1. Recognize indications, precautions and contraindications for immobilization and mobilization splinting of the upper extremity

2. Analyze mechanical properties required to fabricate low temperature thermoplastic immobilization and mobilization splints for the upper extremity.

3. Compare and contrast splinting materials, outrigger/ and or coil designs of immobilization and mobilization splints.

4. Identify important anatomical structures and landmarks of the upper extremity.

5. Analyze key characteristics of splinting materials for fabrication of specific splints.

6. Gain fabrication skills utilizing different splinting materials.



Who can attend this course? Physical and Occupational Therapists, Physical and Occupational Therapy Assistants, All levels of therapy experience are welcome.

Debby is a hand therapist with over 30 years of experience as a practicing clinician. She has joined Orfit Industries America to promote product awareness and splinting education. Debby is an active member of ASHT and has participated in many IFSHT meetings as well. She has presented on a variety of hand therapy topics both at national and international conferences and has written a number of articles for hand therapy publications, including the Journal of Hand Therapy, the British Journal of Hand Therapy, ADVANCE for OT, OT Practice, and exploringhandtherapy.com. She has also written chapters on hand therapy topics and orthotic fabrication for Occupational Therapy reference books. Debby earned her doctorate from Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions. This will be Debby's second presentation for us in the PNW. We are delighted she is returning!
