Using AR360 Instructional Practice for WIN Time Enrichment and Intervention
AR360 has 2 main components for reading: Independent Reading and Instructional Reading.
We are most familiar with the Independent Reading feature as students can check out books, read them, and take assessments. However, most of us are unfamiliar with the Instructional Reading component.
The Instructional Reading component includes a collection of articles with assignments to address key skills. (You can also import articles and create assignments.) Assignment types include:
- Read and Take Quiz assignments: Students read the article and take a quiz.
- Skills Practice assignments: Students read the article, highlight and tag text that relates to the concept being learned, and answer questions. Skills practice assignments are available with and without a quiz. You can also create your own skills practice assignments.
- Read Aloud, Think Aloud assignments (K-2): Teachers use these to read through an article and demonstrate skills with a class.
- Watch the Video to Learn More: Students read an article and watch a video as they learn how to use information from multiple sources.

WIN (What I Need) Time: Why Your Tier 2 Time is SO Important
After we have new data from DIBELS and STAR, and after you have collected data from observations and work in your classroom, you may see that these groups need to adjust. Adjust them as you see fit. Your WIN time is dedicated to giving students what each one needs. For some kids, that may mean time reading AR books or playing math games. For others, it may mean direct, explicit instruction or previewing material to be covered in an upcoming lesson. One of the more proven ways to "catch kids up" is to front-load. Instead of looking back at what they didn't get in a previous lesson, front load and preview what is to come. This gives kids confidence in the lesson because they now have the background knowledge that might otherwise have been lacking.
