March 2019
A Message from the Principal
Greetings Energy Bus Riders!!!
During the month of February, our Energy Bus journey had us l♥ving our passengers! Students and staff were encouraged to share kindness and find ways to help others! I am proud to say that throughout our school hallways, acts of kindness take place on a daily basis in a variety of ways. One way our school helped others during the month of February was through our annual Jump Rope for Heart campaign to support the American Heart Association! Our school raised over $3,000 to help others with heart issues thanks to our students, staff, and families! Special thanks to Coach Laura Parker for leading this annual event for our school!!
During the month of March, we will focus on Energy Bus Principle #7: Enjoy the Ride! This month we will reinforce the importance of living a happy and healthy life. As we enter MAP testing time, it is the perfect time for us all to review all of the Energy Bus Principles.
#1: "I'm the Driver"
#2: "Create a Positive Vision"
#3: "Drive with Purpose"
#4: "Fuel Your Ride with Positive Energy"
#5: "Transform Negativity"
#6: "L♥ve Your Passengers"
Buckle up and let's continue to enjoy the ride together! Please be sure to read about all of the awesome events scheduled at SCES during the month of March!
Sending lots of positive energy your way for another amazing month!
Mrs. Meyer

Spring MAP Testing Begins
March 5 - March 28
In order for us to know how our students are doing, our students will take two benchmark assessments during the month of March. Students in 5K through 4th grade, will take their Spring MAP assessments in both Reading and Math. The information gained by these benchmarks will provide teachers and students with knowledge about learning that has taken place and about learning that needs to take place during the final months of the school year.
We encourage parents and students to talk about these assessments in a positive way! If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to your child's teacher!

SCES is the Place to Be! - Book Coming Soon!
Shoally Creek is the subject of author/illustrator Bradd Parton’s newest book, SCES Is the Place to Be! The book describes a typical day at Shoally Creek Elementary School and features over 20 full-color illustrations including the school building, mascot, and more. The book is illustrated in the author’s signature Alpha-Sketch style. Every line in an Alpha-Sketch is a letter of the alphabet, and all 26 letters are used once in each illustration. The puzzle-like Alpha-Sketch drawings are decoded in the back of the book where each letter’s location is revealed. The book, which serves as a fundraiser for the school, will also include the names of all SCES students and staff members. Students are also selling South Carolina flag shirts drawn in the Alpha-Sketch style. Every item sold raises money for Shoally Creek Elementary. More information about the fundraiser will be sent home with students on Friday, March 15th.
Greenville Drive Reading All-Stars Program - All Grades!
All Shoally Creek students in 5K - 4th grade are invited to participate in this year’s Greenville Drive Reading All-Stars Program! Students are challenged to read ONLY 5 reading-level appropriate books in a 5 week time period to qualify as a Reading All-Star!!! Students who complete the reading program will receive a ticket voucher to the Celebration Game that will be held on Sunday, May 5th at Flour Field in Greenville. At the game, they will receive Reading All-Stars merchandise, a book, and they will be able to participate in the pre-game parade around the field! Reading logs will go home with students for parent signatures at the beginning of February.
We hope to see ALL of our SCE Blue Jays participating in this fun reading challenge! Happy Reading!

Morning Drop-off Procedures
- 1. Kindergarten and 1st grade students (and older siblings) drop-off at the back of the school (Kindergarten line); while 2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders drop-off at the front of the school. This allows for a more even number of drop-offs at both places.
- 2. Please pull all the way forward when dropping-off students at the front of the school. This keeps the car line moving and affords for more cars to unload at one time. We have two entrances (200 and 300 wings) in which students can enter to safely get into the building and move to their classrooms. For everyone's safety, please refrain from going around vehicles while in the drop-off lane.
- 3. The supervising staff members go inside at 7:38 am. Students are to be in their classrooms by the 7:40 am tardy bell. Please escort your student into the front office after 7:38 am. Morning routines & classroom instruction begin at 7:30 am each morning.
We certainly appreciate your understanding and cooperation when it comes to following these procedures.
Reminders
*Important to have current phone numbers & email addresses:
Please make sure that you are stressing to your school families that they need to have the correct email and phone number in school messenger. Otherwise, they may not receive important information like school-cancellation calls or registration information.
*From Bus Transportation Department Concerning School Delays:
When we have a 1-hour delay, the bus will arrive at the bus stop 1 hour from the normal pick-up time. So, if the bus normally arrives at 6;15 am, then on a one-hour delay, it will arrive at 7:15 am.
When we have a 2-hour delay, the bus will arrive at the bus stop 2 hours from the normal time. So, if the bus normally arrives at 6:15 am, then on a two-hour delay, it will arrive at 8:15 am.
*Transportation Changes:
All afternoon transportation changes must be communicated to the front office by 11:00 am. Please reference the Student Handbook for further information.
*Attendance/Truancy:
Please remember the South Carolina Compulsory Attendance Laws and Regulations in regards to the number of minutes students must attend school each day. Every minute that a student is not in class is counted and reported to the state. If a student misses even 15 minutes of class, this adds up to over an hour of class each week. Please make every minute count for learning!
