Animal Guide of the Week:
-Laura Craford, RLA Social Worker
For those of you who do not know what the animal cards mean…
Each newsletter I will pull a card from my deck of animal guide cards, it is our message for the week—something we need to think about, understand or that we need to remember about ourselves or a situation. This is something that I have been doing with RLA students and staff for a while now, it’s my thing. 😊 If you ever want your own card, message me (Laura) through teams or @ (740) 240-2311 and I will send you a picture of one OR come to my office for one when we were in school!
Ladybug
This week at RLA we are LADYBUGS: “This is a time of good fortune and abundance, so be willing to receive all good things in your life.” The ladybug can be interpreted in so many ways. For today, I am reminded of gratitude. It is really easy to get stuck in a place where we only think about what we don’t have or what is wrong with our life. I think it is important to remind ourselves of the things we do have in our life—food, shelter, our people, school—they might not be “perfect” but what does perfect even mean anyway!?! “Gratitude is the key to continually receiving good fortune, joy, and abundance. Be willing not only to ask for, but also to graciously receive and accept all that comes your way.” After my dad passed away unexpectedly 3 years ago, I remember feeling not only sad, but angry and a bit hopeless. I listened to this podcast about grief and loss that said if you want to bring joy back into your life, you actually have to think about the things that bring you joy—and not only the big things, but the little everyday things too because they add up to “good fortune and abundance”! After listening to the podcast, I started a daily gratitude journal, and eventually it worked. Although I do still get sad sometimes, I was able to let go of the angry and hopeless feelings by thinking about and willingly receiving the good things in life. So, on that note:
Three things that bring me joy…
1- cherry blossoms, especially when they snow from the tree and blanket the side walk
2- being at RLA with students again after the LONGEST year ever
3- a walk and talk around the ponds with a friend after work
I think I would like to talk to someone...

What is efficacy? We hear this term a lot when people talk about vaccines. 95% for Pfizer/BioNTech 94% for Moderna but only 66% for J&J? Is this vaccine even worth it? In this week's post about the science behind COVID I want to address what is efficacy, its importance, and why it is not the only thing to look at when evaluating a vaccine.
This week's video, curtesy of VOX, explores these questions and does a great job of explaining why the J&J vaccine is just as effective in what matters when it comes to COVID 19: To give your body enough protection to survive COVID and keep you out of the hospital. Under that metric J&J and the other vaccines are 100% effective.*
