December 2020
Knik Elementary School
From the Principals Desk
I would like to take the opportunity here at the end of first semester to celebrate a very nice recognition Knik Elementary has received. Knik Elementary was selected as a National ESEA Distinguished School! Read the full press release here: www.matsuk12.us/domain/8864. Each year, two schools from each state are selected for his honor and we are very proud to have been selected. Schools are nominated and selected for this award based on the academic achievement students show on our State performance tests. I would like to first say thank you to all the teachers and support staff who work tirelessly for our students. Next, I want to congratulate our students on the truly outstanding level of learning they are showing. Last, but not least, I want to say thank you to all parents. Without your support for your student and our school, we could not have accomplished all that we have. 2020 has been a challenging year for everyone and it is nice to end it on a positive note. The entire Knik Staff will continue working hard to provide a rich and robust educational experience for every student and we expect even higher levels of success in the future. This is a great time to be a Knik King!

Family Holiday Craft Night
This week, Knik Elementary is sponsoring a family engagement activity for students and parents to participate in at home. Normally our Family Holiday Craft Night is a fun event where students and families come to the school for craft stations and a little bit of holiday fun. This year we are unable to bring everyone together at the school, but we are hoping families can still have fun doing some holiday crafts at home! At the end of the week, each student will be bringing a selection of pre-packaged craft supplies home. The Knik Staff have prepared directions and example videos that will be posted on our website at www.matsuk12.us/Page/3611. Our hope is that families will be able to assemble several fun crafts using the supplies and following the step-by-step directions we post. We will keep the website up through the entire break so families can plan when is best for them to do the crafts. Parents, just a heads up, you may want to collect the craft supplies from students when they bring them home! From the Knik Staff to all Knik Families, we wish you a very happy holiday season!
** IF YOUR STUDENT IS ABSENT ON FRIDAY 12/18, WE WILL BE PLACING A BOX OF PREPARED CRAFT SUPPLIES OUTSIDE THAT YOU MAY PICK UP TO BRING HOME **
Library News
Do not forget to continue reading with and having your student read over the holidays! I have found that they still love to be read to-bring out those Christmas/holiday books. You have so many choices for this great quality time with your kids. They can check out books from the Knik Library before the break, sign into SORA from home any time or run down to the Wasilla Public Library. Do not forget that gift cards to the local bookstores too! Young and Old kids alike enjoy doing crafts with adults…how about a Kid’s Craft book or Grandma’s old cookbook to make some new memories? Whatever you choose, have a very Merry Christmas! Mrs. Michener, Knik Elem. Librarian melinda.michener@matsuk12.us

From the Nurse’s Office
Parents, please send an extra mask to school with your child daily. They tend to get damp from the condensation during recess. Reusable masks are ideal because they can be washed. It is a great idea to plan over the weekend and pack them in your child’s backpack at the beginning of the week. Please be mindful that your child needs a good night’s sleep every night to stay healthy and alert through the school week.
As the temps are starting to hit freezing levels, we will be seeing more cold and wet snow gear at the end of the day. Please incorporate laying wet items out to dry each evening as a part of your child’s routine. If you notice your child is missing something, please have them check the lost and found.
