Together we can do so much!

August 27, 2021

Welcome Back!!!

It is usually about this time that I begin hearing adults singing "It's the most wonderful time of they year" when they see me.....and I agree! I'm very excited to be welcoming back all of our returning students and getting to meet those new to our school community!

There is no doubt that last year was incredibly challenging, and this year looks like it will be bringing new challenges along with it. We will weather them together, remembering that we share the common goal of ensuring that each one of our students is safe and able to learn and grow as a critical member of our school community. While it may not always be easy, it will always be worth it because our children are worth it!

As we dive into a new year, please know that my door is always open and I welcome your questions and feedback. I can always be reached at alooman@mtrsd.org or by calling 413-624-3451. Please read all of the important information listed below. I can't wait to partner with you this year.

School hours and calendar

The school day begins at 8:45 and ends at 3:15. Students may begin arriving at 8:30 and head to either breakfast or Meet & Greet.

Please make sure you are familiar with the school calendar found at: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1oRT33KJgGepKumq7XSoGOd4MmrcZ4Xpm/view so that you are aware of early release days, etc.

Before/After School Programs

I'm very excited to share that I have found an After School Program Director....Alyssa Patenaude! Alyssa has two children in our school: Carson in 1st grade and Reagan in PK. She's very excited to be taking this venture on and has some great ideas planned. The program will run from dismissal until 5:30 M-F. The cost for this program is $6/hour for one student and $5/hour for all subsequent family members.
The first day will be Monday, September 13th in order to allow all paperwork to clear. Please be on the lookout next week for registration information.

We do not yet have staffing for our Before School Program. I am still looking for someone to fill that position and will let you know as soon as we are ready.

outdoor learning and eating

I mentioned last week that all staff, students, and visitors to the building will be required to wear a mask when inside. We will continue to be outside as much as possible throughout the school day, including for breakfast and lunch this year, to help reduce the amount of time people must be masked. This means that unless the weather is incredibly inclement, students may be outside for large portions of their day. Please make sure that they have extra layers and are dressed appropriately to be outside....rain or shine.

Preschool Schedule for the first three days

I apologize if there has been any confusion regarding the preschool schedule for next week. The start of preschool is a little bit different, in order to allow our youngest learners to have a positive first experience with school. By now, you should have received an email from Tylor Chmura, the preschool teacher, with your child's schedule for that first week. Each student has been assigned a half hour timeslot on Wednesday OR Thursday. This is a time for each child to come in, explore the classroom and meet the teacher. They must be accompanied by an adult during this time. On Friday, they will come in for an hour and a half with half of the class. They will have some fun activities together and get to know one another. Adults are welcome to leave their child during this time. The regular preschool schedule will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 7th. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to Ms. Chmura or myself.

Breakfast and Lunch

We are pleased to let you all know that the federal government has approved the extension of free meals for all students, regardless of family income, for the 2021-2022 school year. Each morning, any student who wants to eat school breakfast can go to the cafeteria to get a "grab & go" breakfast and eat it out at the picnic table during Meet & Greet. The breakfast menu will remain the same each week.

The September lunch menu is pictured below. Students wishing to have school lunch will sign up in their classrooms each morning.

first day celebration

We are very exciting to be welcoming all of our students and families to the start of a new school year! We hope you can join us for our First Day Celebration. The schedule for the day is as follows:

8:45-9:30: Family members/community members will gather on the Patio (under a tent in the case of rain) where they will be able to visit some displays, meet other CCS community members, and hear about what is ahead for the school year.

9:30-10:15: All school Assembly with all students, family, and community members on the blacktop. Staff will be introduced, students welcomed back, quiet signals taught, as well as a short activity and story.

10:15: Families/community members say goodbye to students who then return to their classrooms for the remainder of the morning.

11:15-12:15: lunches served

12:30: dismissal

Preschool families are welcome to bring their child to the assembly if they would like, even though the class will not be participating as a group.

Transportation

Bus routes can be found on the district website at https://www.mohawktrailschools.org/Transportation

If you plan on transporting your child to/from school you will need to drop them off and pick them up in the back parking lot again. Our procedure is going to vary a little bit this year. If we find that these changes are not working smoothly, we will make adjustments as needed. When you drop your child off, please pull around to the back lot and drive as far forward as possible. This helps to keep the line moving and prevent a back up out into the front lot where the buses will be and/or the road. There will be staff members there to help your child safely exit your vehicle and walk around the building for Meet & Greet or to their class's designated meeting place (PK only).

When you pick your child up, again, please pull out back and as far forward as possible. Your child will be brought to your car by a staff member. Please leave the lot as soon as your child is buckled up.

Changes from last spring:

  • Because students will be able to use the hallways more freely this year, we will have students who are being picked up gathered in one place rather than coming from multiple places.
  • Preschoolers will be dropped off and picked up in the back parking lot as well. Staff will help them out of their car seats in the morning. Because they dismiss at a different time from the rest of the school, families will be able to exit their cars to buckle them in at pick up.
  • Students will go to Meet & Greet upon arrival, rather than to their classrooms.

Intake conferences

If you have not already done so, please schedule an intake conference with your child(ren)'s teacher(s).

Wednesday, Sept. 1st, Thursday, Sept. 2nd, and Friday, Sept. 3rd are all 12:30 dismissals to allow the opportunity for families and teachers to meet to discuss the year ahead. Please contact Mrs. White in the front office to schedule yours if you have not already done so. (413-624-3451 or swhite@mtrsd.org)
