We hope that you had a restful and relaxing Winter Break and we wish you a prosperous 2023. We are looking forward to a wonderful second semester! On behalf of the staff, thank you for the kind words, cards, gifts, and gestures prior to Winter Break. It is never necessary, but truly appreciated! We are super excited about the students returning tomorrow and we are ready for a great semester of learning.

Starting with the return of the students tomorrow, January will pick right up where we left off in December. Here are some things to be aware of to be put on your radar. Next Friday, January 13th is Assessment Day. Assessment Day is very important, as it allows

students to truly show their ability in a small group setting. A sign-up genius was sent out before break and can be accessed through the link here.

Before we know it, February will be here and conferences will be upon us. Conferences for

Glacier Peak will be held on Wednesday, February 15th from 4 - 8 PM and Thursday, February 16 from 8 AM - 4 PM. A Sign Up Genius will be sent out closer to February for you to sign up for conferences. Please ensure that you make your best effort to attend conferences with your child’s teacher. In addition to Wednesday, there will be no school Thursday, February 16th, and Friday, February 17th for students.

Another important reminder for your attention. Please help us ensure the safety of our students by following our arrival and dismissal procedures. For review, here are the same tips that we shared before Winter Break:

• It is IMPERATIVE to pull all the way forward in the HUG and GO lane. By stopping early in the line close to the building, it causes major backups on Jasmine. This is dangerous, causing folks to make poor decisions because traffic is blocking the intersection. Pedestrians are at risk because there is not a full view for drivers.
• Time is important to all of us, but please slow down and be present when on Glacier Peak's campus and in the school zone.

The Adams 12 School Choice window opens December 1, 2022 at which time a list of schools open to Choice will be posted to this website: Choice Program The deadline for priority consideration is January 31, 2023.

Applying for Choice is Easy

Here’s how:

• Find the Adams 12 school that best meets your student’s needs by viewing our Programs webpages, reviewing your boundary school, reviewing our list of schools (by clicking on our website and using the “Our Schools” dropdown at the top of the page) and their geographic locations.

• Apply between December 1, 2022 and January 31, 2023 by ranking up to four of your four schools using the online Choice Application.

• Enroll in your school after you get the choice lottery results in late February 2023. Your choice results email will contain a custom link for your family to enroll.

More about Adams 12 Choice

Entrance into high school programs with specialized admissions criteria like Horizon SOAR, Legacy 2000, Mountain Range High School of BusinessTM, Northglenn High STEM and EC@N-STEM Programs and Thornton High International Baccalaureate (IB) are managed directly by each school. In-district and out-of-district students wishing to attend high school programs with specialized admissions criteria must apply directly with the school’s program and do not need to apply with the Choice Program. More information about this process can be found on school websites.

Students who receive approval of their Choice application and attend schools outside their assigned attendance area are responsible for their own transportation to and from the school. Families eligible for homeless assistance services should consult with the Student and Family Outreach Program before choosing to participate in the Choice program by calling 720-972-6015.

Know Crosswalk Law

When driving near crosswalks, make sure you follow the rules of the road to avoid crashes.

• Stop at Crosswalks — Colorado law says that drivers must stop at a crosswalk if a pedestrian is walking on that half of the road or is within 10 feet of crossing that half of the road.
• Don’t Pass Other Cars — You may not pass other vehicles that are stopped at a crosswalk to allow pedestrians to walk.
• Obey Speed Limits — Makes sure you follow posted speed limits near crosswalks. The school zone speed limit in Colorado is 20 miles per hour.

Drive Carefully Around Crosswalks

When driving in areas with crossing guards and children, follow these tips to keep pedestrians safe.

• Look out for signs that you are near a crosswalk, such as pedestrian crossing signs, hand-held stop paddles, and the reflective vests that crossing guards wear.
• Slow down when approaching a crosswalk.
• Avoid distracted driving — don’t do things that will take your attention off the road like texting, emailing, surfing the web, or playing games on your phone.
• Look out for pedestrians at all times. Take extra care when you’re in areas with lots of pedestrians like school zones, parks, playgrounds, and bus stops.
• Try to make eye contact with pedestrians so you know that they see you. Just because you see them doesn’t mean they see you.
• Be aware that children and crossing guards may be blocked from view by buses or cars. Use caution around other vehicles.
• If you see a situation where crossing guards are exposed to traffic dangers, contact your local police department or school.

Teach Children How to Cross the Street Safely

Most child pedestrian injuries occur after school. Make sure your kids know these street-crossing tips, and be a good role model when you cross the street with them.

• Look left, then right, then left again before crossing the street, even if you’re at a crosswalk or if there is a walk signal.
• Just because you can see a driver doesn’t mean the driver can see you. Try to make eye contact with approaching drivers so you know that they see you.
• Wait for drivers to stop before you start to cross the street.
• Use crosswalks and follow walk signals. Don’t cross in front of a parked car. Drivers won’t be able to see you behind the vehicle.
• Cross the street responsibly — don’t text, listen to music, or do anything else that will distract you. Stay aware of your surroundings and walk, don’t run, across the street.
• Be careful in parking lots, driveways, and other places where pedestrian crashes are common. Look for signs that a car is about to move or back up, such as rear lights, the sound of the motor, and wheels turning.
• Stay on sidewalks when possible. If there are none, walk facing traffic.
• Wear retro-reflective clothing when walking in the dark.

By following these tips while driving and teaching your kids to be cautious pedestrians, you can help keep children and crossing guards out of harm’s way throughout the school year.
