Brought to you by the Shepard Elementary PTA
From our Principal
Happy Summer, Shepard Parents!
The Shepard Staff and I are so excited and cannot wait to have kids in the school building again starting on Monday, August 21. (It’s so quiet without the kids here!) The first day of school is an exciting time and is an especially exciting day this year. Earlier this week, I sent (via email) a letter regarding the Solar Eclipse taking place on Monday, August 21. The letter gives resources and includes an “opt out” form if you would like to opt out of your child participating in outdoor eclipse viewing activities. The school district has graciously purchased a large number of certified eclipse viewing glasses that would allow each grade level to take turns viewing the eclipse. The teachers are also planning other indoor activities for that day to learn about and experience the eclipse. Please check your email for the message titled “Important Eclipse information from Shepard Elem.”
Also, please look for a phone call on the evening of August 17 letting you(and your child) know who your child’s teacher is. Don’t worry- a message will be left if you do not answer. Then, join us on Friday, August 18 from 8-9 am for our Meet the Teacher Event. The kids can start the school year out this Friday with a hug and a high five from their new teacher!
I can’t wait to meet all of you and our students!

Solar Eclipse on August 21
Are your children excited about the upcoming solar eclipse on August 21, the first day of school?
Plano ISD has shared some resources with the campuses, and our Shepard teachers are planning for the best possible experience for the children. The attached letter from Plano ISD gives details about some of the activities and resources we will be looking at and considering as we plan. The school district has purchased some certified eclipse viewing glasses for the schools so that we may provide a safe experience for all children. We will be sharing the glasses among grade levels, so not every grade level group will be outside at the same time. However, we recognize the importance of safety in viewing the eclipse, so if you prefer for your child to NOT participate in the outdoor viewing activities, please sign the attached "opt out" form and return it to Shepard Elementary on or by August 21. (Dropping it off when you come for our Meet the Teacher Event on Friday, August 18 from 8-9 am is a perfect solution!)
We look forward to seeing you on Friday, August 18 from 8-9 am for our Meet the Teacher Event!

Its Time to Complete the PISD Background Check!
Remember this needs to be renewed EVERY school year and is necessary for any school volunteering events you want to be a part of. This includes field trips and so much more.
Please complete this as soon as possible so you are ready for the start of the 2017-2018 school year!
If you have an incoming 5th grader and want to be considered as a camp chaperone it is necessary to complete this as well.
