Understanding Your Child's Progress Report
Similar to the previous report card, the new progress report is a standards-based report. This type of progress report lists the most important standards students should learn in each subject at their particular grade level. Instead of traditional letter grades, students receive a mark of I-E that indicates how well they have mastered the required standards. The marks will show their level of achievement with the Pennsylvania Core State Standards. Students will get separate marks for characteristics of a successful learner. Standards-based grading focuses on the student’s achievement rather than how quickly they learned or how many times it took them to master the standards.
Academic Performance Level for Standards Achievement Score
E - Exceeds Standards/ Expectation
M - Meets Standards/ Expectation
A - Approaching the Standard/ Expectation
I - Improvement Needed
N - Not assessed this marking period
“A” reflects normal progress and is expected in the first two trimesters. A student is expected to progress towards meeting the standards over the course of the year because the standards are end of grade-level expectations. The goal is for all students to be at a level “M” by the end of the school year.

School-wide Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (SWPBIS)
Tawanka Elementary is proud to announce that we have earned our SWPBIS tier I banner! On February 22, 2018, Tawanka participated in a School-wide Evaluation Tool (SET) assessment in which students, staff, and administrators were interviewed about their knowledge of our school behavior expectations. We are so proud to be recognized by our state PBIS team for our successful implementation.
Some key features of the SWPBIS program at Tawanka include: Tawanka Tokens, The Principal’s 200 Board, Pick a Chip Friday, and positive calls home. Thank you for your support at home and for encouraging your child to be respectful, responsible, and safe! Go Empowered Eagles!

Spoons Up for Dr. Seuss’s Birthday - March 2nd!
What you’ll need:
straight-sided clear glass or plastic tumblers
long-handled ice cream spoons
vanilla yogurt (thicker Greek yogurt works well) or vanilla ice cream
your favorite fresh red berries or cherries, coarsely chopped
whipped cream
decorating bag or plastic sandwich bag (optional)
Directions:
Wash fruits, let dry, then coarsely chop. In each glass, alternate layers of vanilla yogurt with your favorite fresh red berries or cherries, creating the red and white stripes of the Cat’s hat. To keep the yogurt from smearing, use a decorating bag (or plastic sandwich bag with the corner cut off) to fill the glasses. Top off these toppers with a dollop of whipped cream, grab your favorite Dr. Seuss book to enjoy while eating and dig in!

Automated Absence Calls
In order to increase our safety measures, all elementary schools now send out automated messages when students are marked absent from school. This message will be sent at approximately 11:00 AM each school day to the guardian phone numbers listed in Home Access Center. We still ask that you call your child out before 8:50 AM when you know he/she will be absent AND follow-up with a note when your child returns to school.
You may now submit an absence note via the following email:
Please be aware that you may still receive an automated phone call even though you've reported the absence. In addition, please be certain that your HAC phone number and email address (not a student email) are up-to-date.
