Sight Words-We will have a new list of sight words that were sent home on Friday-November 1st. The words are : out, over, then, there, this. We will test on FRIDAY. Please review last weeks words.
Word Their Way-This homework comes home on MONDAY. Please do not have your child glue word or picture items to their sorting mats until Thursday. They need to be moving the pieces around. Students are bring sorts back with pictures glued to them on Tuesday-no thank you! . This makes us sad. They are practicing moving the pictures or words over and over again. They do need to have a sort set for home. They will have another one for school. On test day the spelling teacher will provide a 3rd sort set.
In our guided reading groups, they are working on various skills-rhyming, initial sounds, final sounds, syllable counts, adjectives and sight words. Each reading group is different and supports what the students are learning in class.
PLEASE SEND READING MATERIALS DAILY.
We have launched into our first research project. Students have been discussing a zoo animals. They will be doing more research over the next few weeks on zoo animals. We will be working on questions like- where do they live, what do they eat and what is an interesting fact. As we move through this we will be learning about non-fictional texts and text feature-such as a table of contents, glossary and index.
Social Studies- Student will be learning about the past and present. We will be exploring timelines. We will also discuss the traditions of Thanksgiving and how Thanksgiving came to be.
Math- We are finishing on patterns of number. Student should be able to count by 1's 2's, 5's, 10's up to 120. We will be asking your children to count for us again this week. We are excited to see their progress.
For the next couple weeks we will be developing an understanding of Base 10 relationships to develop various strategies and methods for whole number computation. We will be focused on developing an understanding that two digit numbers are made of tens and ones. We will explore adding two digit and one digit numbers using a hundred chart and groups of tens and ones. We will still be practicing and reviewing using skip counting during our problem solving time. An example problem might be-There are 4 children on the swings. How many total fingers do they have? The goal is for our students to demonstrate the ability to determine efficient ways of solving these problems- drawings, number lines, 10-frames, using a 100's chart, using repeating addition and subtraction.
Science - We will be learning about forces and movement. The vocabulary on this unit is fun and exciting. We will be demonstrating, recording, and describing the ways objects move. Most objects move in such a way as in a straight line, zig zag, up and down, back and forth, round and round and fast and slow.
Scholastic Book Fair November 11th-15th
There will also be time when you can come shopping for your children- remember the holidays are just around the corner and books make a FABULOUS GIFT. The office has already sent out a flyer with all the details.
Cold and Flu season is HERE!
Your child’s health is of great importance. It is that time of year when colds, flu and viruses run wild in schools, churches, and other public places. We will take every precaution to have a healthy and safe environment. Please consider getting a flu shot for yourself and your child. Having the flu is not any fun and can be life threatening for young children.
We would like you to consider keeping your child home if they have fever, diarrhea and vomiting. It is requested that students be symptom free for 24 hours before returning to school. Please don't give your child a fever reducer and send them to school. Our bodies create a fever to fight viruses and to give us a warning that we are sick. When you send a child to school sick you will be impacting 20 plus families in addition to the teachers and their families. Teachers don't like missing days of school due to illness.
If your child becomes ill while at school, we will take them to the school nurse. The nurse will evaluate your child and contact you to let you know if you need to pick your child up. Please keep in mind the only person on campus that can give any medication is our school nurse.
