Woodholme to become Title 1 Targeted Assistance Program school for 2017-2018
Woodholme Elementary School has been identified as a Title 1, Part A, Targeted Assistance Program school for the 2017-18 school year. Schools are NOT chosen based on test scores or academic achievement, but rather are identified based on Free and Reduced Meals (FARMS) status. As part of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), Title I focuses on improving the academic achievement of disadvantaged children. Funding seeks to ensure that all children have a fair, equal, and significant opportunity to obtain a high quality education and reach proficiency on challenging State academic standards and State academic assessments.
Each local educational agency (LEA) like Baltimore County Public Schools receives funds from the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) based on the census count of low income families residing in the LEA. Eligible students in the attendance area generate funds. However, the targeted students receiving services may or may not be economically disadvantaged. Baltimore County Public Schools (BCPS) ensures that all eligible students receive services. Currently, BCPS serves elementary schools with poverty rates at or above 55.91%, middle schools at or above 66.35%, and high schools at or above 75%, as determined by free and reduced meals status.
Click on the informational flyers below for more information. At the beginning of the school year there will be an informational meeting planned for any interested parents, and additional information will be provided as we plan for the 2017-18 school year to include the Targeted Assistance program. We look forward to this additional opportunity to help Woodholme students!
PARCC Testing
Students in grades 3, 4, and 5 will each be participating in 7 days of PARCC testing this month. Students will complete 4 units of Math and 3 units of ELA. Please review the May calendar for specific testing dates, and make sure your child is well rested and fed each morning of testing.
Visitation during Testing
While state mandated testing is taking place in the school building, visitation to Woodholme must be restricted in order to ensure test security. We appreciate your understanding. Please review the calendar for specific testing dates.

A Note From the Principal
Dear Woodholme Families,
As you can see from the newsletter blurb above, Woodholme Elementary has been identified as a Targeted Assistance Title 1 school for the 2017-18 school year. Our school was included as a Title 1 school based on the Free And Reduced Meals (FARMS) percentage in our school. This designation means additional money provided to the school next year for additional staffing and materials for specific targeted students demonstrating the need for academic support. More information will be provided for parents via a parent meeting and informational flyers and letters, especially if your child is chosen to participate next school year. See the blurb above and links to informational flyers for more information on this opportunity.
We are very excited this year to again showcase student talents and work by inviting families and community members to Woodholme on May 23rd from 5:45 - 7:45 PM for our 3rd annual Student Showcase night! The 5th grade band/orchestra and the Woodholme Chorus will perform starting at 6:00, and the Rockin' Rockets will perform afterwards. Every student in the school will have something to display, so feel free to stop in and celebrate our amazing students with us!
Every year the arrival of May brings the national Teacher Appreciation Week which is traditionally celebrated the first (and this year second) week in May. This year due to the PARCC testing taking place starting tomorrow, we changed Teacher Appreciation Week for Woodholme teachers to this past week. This past Tuesday AND Wednesday the PTA provided teachers with special lunches, so thank you PTA! Teachers were so appreciative of the PTA support, and they look forward to continued partnership with the PTA to make Woodholme the best school around!! I would like to encourage all students and parents to take time this or next week to show your appreciation to our hardworking teachers by sending in a note of thanks or encouragement to your children's teachers. National Teacher Appreciation Day is Tuesday, May 9th, and the official Teacher Appreciation Week for 2017 is May 8-12th. Woodholme teachers plan and implement great instruction for our students, so let's celebrate their dedication during National Teacher Appreciation Week!
The state mandated PARCC testing will take place the next three weeks at Woodholme, so thanks for avoiding those important testing dates when scheduling dentist and doctor appointments for your 3rd, 4th and 5th graders. See the calendar attached to this newsletter for the exact PARCC testing dates for your child(ren).
The official last day of school will be Tuesday, June 13th, with Monday and Tuesday, June 12 and 13 being 3 hour early dismissal days for elementary and middle schools.
Thank you for reading the newsletter and school emails to stay informed about Woodholme! We appreciate your communication, collaboration and support! Here's wishing everyone a great end to our school year!
