TILLERS FIND CREATIVE WAYS TO IMPROVE FITNESS
By Ringo Bossenmeyer – Physical Education Teacher
Improving one’s fitness level during the Covid-19 pandemic can be a challenging task for anyone. However, our Tustin High School Physical Education students are finding fun and creative ways to sustain and improve their personal fitness level during these unprecedented times.
All THS P.E. students whether they are on a hybrid schedule, or a full-time distance learner, must complete three workouts every week and submit “Workout Exit Tickets” describing their fitness sessions. Coach Gocke, Coach Pratt, and Coach Boss have been truly impressed with the different methods our students have found to push themselves in their workouts while enjoying themselves at the same time. Activities that have been documented are resistance training at home with household items being substituted for weight equipment, following online workouts with fitness trainers that emphasize; improving one’s cardiovascular fitness, strength training using body weight only, abdominal/core work, and shadow-boxing as well.
However, our students have also taken the opportunity to take workouts outdoors when possible. We have had students challenging themselves with hikes and runs regularly at Peter’s Canyon Regional Park and even 1,000 Steps Beach in Laguna Beach. What is especially pleasing to our P.E. teachers is when our students report that they have recruited their parents, siblings, and other family members (including the family dog) to join them in their training sessions.
Great Job Tillers!!!
TILLER SPOTLIGHT: MAXIMILIANO VILLAREAL
Submitted by Mark Barry, Tustin High Mathematics Teacher
This week’s Math Department Tiller Spotlight is on Maximiliano Villarreal. Max is an outstanding student of Honors Pre-Calculus. He is always one of the first members of his class to join the Zoom session or come into the classroom. He always greets everybody in the class with a “Happy ______day” for whatever day of the week it is, brightening the mood of everybody who hears him. When in breakout rooms, Max makes sure to ask if his group has any questions and is eager to assist if they do. Congratulations Max!
Finding Your Sound in Music Tech
By: Eric Zamora, Tustin High Music Tech Teacher
Music Tech looks very different this year. We face the challenge of learning without the studio equipment that students enjoy using. We adapt to these times by using a software called Band Lab for Education. This is a digital audio workstation, or DAW for short, that allows students to create musical compositions by adding instrument loops or recording their own sounds using the MIDI interface. Although this software is not as advanced as Logic, which the students use at school, it has enough features to help us learn the concepts from the Music Tech curriculum. Many students acclimated successfully to this software and have created impressive compositions on Band Lab for Education. One student is junior, Nowshad Aslam. His projects exceed expectations and usually have a video game, sci-fi, techno sound. When asked about what he enjoys about Music Tech, Nowshad shares, “I listen to music every day. It’s like my favorite thing to do. Music Tech helps me create my own beats and rhythm. I just really enjoy it.” Although we are limited in what we can do in this class, most students are demonstrating their creative side and making the most of Band Lab for Education.
