Tisch's Tidbits
Welcome back! I hope the kiddos had a nice break and are refreshed. We are ready to finish up the last 34 days of school. My family and I traveled to Florida to spend a day at Magic Kingdom followed by a few days in Palm Coast. The Vitamin D was good for the mind and soul. Now that we are back in the swing of things, hold on tight as we are racing to the finish line!
Tuck Everlasting
We read this book before break and would like to watch the movie to compare the book and movie. Since it is rated PG, could you please fill out the form granting permission for your child to watch to movie if you agree to this. If you have questions, please feel free to ask me. I have watched the movie a few times now. :) We would like to watch it this Thursday and Friday over the course of two days. Please respond by tomorrow evening. Thank you!

NWEA
Next week we will be doing the Spring NWEA assessments on Wednesday and Thursday mornings. We will only be assessing math and reading this time. We will not be completing a language arts assessment.
Gentle Reminder
We are so fortunate to have many Eagle Rec after school clubs and activities. To assist everyone in making sure that students head to the correct after school location, please be sure to send a note with your child each week. For example, if your child has tennis on Wednesdays, please send a note with your child every Wednesday during the session that they should be go to tennis that day. Thank you for your support.
Famous Hoosiers
Your child now knows who their Famous Hoosier is for the famous Wax Museum! Coming home this week will be information that will help guide you through this process. Just a reminder that the sources for your child's research is due next Monday. Please read over the materials and then initial showing the materials are appropriate. If it is a book, placing a post it note with your signature will work. In past years, some items have been sent in with inappropriate material especially items from websites. Yikes! We will begin diving into the material and taking notes as we are on a pretty tight schedule. Also, feel free to start looking for items your child can wear for the Wax Museum which will be held on Wednesday, May 23 from 1:30-2:00.
Day of Play
On Thursday, we will be having a Day of Play! What does this mean? This means we will be playing all day. No structured lessons. No tests. No prepared lessons. "Global School Play Day" has significant psychological and cognitive impact on children. It positively develops physical fitness, at times requires strategic thinking, and provides practice for social and emotional development. The students will still have lunch, recess, snack and specials like usual, but when they are in the classroom, they will decide what they want to play. They also get to choose which special's class they would like to attend on this day!
To make this day as successful as possible, we are inviting the children to bring in some items they would be willing to share and play with on this fun, special day. (Make sure these are marked with your child’s name and that your child is able to carry the items independently.) Please be mindful that these items will be shared with many children and there is the possibility of breakage. Make careful consideration as to the item(s) brought in for this special day.
Non-violent, school appropriate items include:
· Legos and other construction/engineering items (Lincoln Logs, K'nex, marble runs, Tinker Toys, Magna-Tiles, Snap Circuits, Zoob toys, etc...)
· Cards and card/dice games (Uno,Yahtzee, Rummikub, etc...)
· Dominoes
· Board games (Monopoly, Sequence, Operation, Life, Risk, Chutes and Ladders, CandyLand, Trouble, Sorry, etc...)
· Art supplies and other items to build, create, and construct
· Stuffed animals/puppets/paper bags for puppet shows,
· Etc...
Keep in mind, no electronics or handheld electronic games.
When children play, they learn: cooperation, problem-solving skills, language skills, and math skills. In addition, children develop: curiosity, self-esteem, strength and coordination, self-direction and values. To quote Mr. Fred Rogers, “Play gives children a chance to practice what they are learning . . . They have to play with what they know to be true in order to find out more, and then they can use what they learn in new forms of play.”
Noetics Math Contest
Friday afternoon, we will be taking part of the Noetics Math Contest. The Noetic Learning Math Contest (NLMC) is a semiannual problem solving contest for elementary and middle school students. The goal of the competition is to encourage students' interest in math, to develop their problem solving skills, and to inspire them to excel in math.
During the contest, students are given 45 minutes to solve 20 problems. Many problems are designed to challenge students and to enrich their problem solving experiences. The contest is for students in grades 2-8. There are several awards including:
National Honor Roll Medal: The top 10% of all participants in each grade will receive 'National Honor Roll' medals.
Team Winner Medal: The highest scorer of each team will receive a 'Team Winner' medal.
Team Achievement Plaque: The top 10% of teams (excluding after-school institution teams and home school teams) will receive Team Achievement Plaques.
We should know the results before school is out!
A letter will be coming home tomorrow with a release on the backside for you to complete and return.
