Weekly HAWKS Update

News and Information about Our Harrington School Community

Update Nine: October 27th, 2022

Hello Harrington Families and Friends,

I hope you are having a wonderful week and for those of you who have had conferences already and were here in person, it was great to see you!

We started on Monday with many of our families celebrating Diwali and some of our staff, students and their families shared information about their culture and the importance of this holiday. Some staff were fortunate to taste some of the delicious sweet treats too! I have shared a few photos below. Please remember if your student would like to share about your family's culture and traditions, we have the opportunity for anyone to participate in "We All Belong Wednesdays", information can be found at the end of this newsletter on how to get involved.

This week has also been been full of fall fun with pumpkin math, pumpkin activities, leaf collecting and Halloween themed stories. As we have done for the past few years we will continue with fall themed celebrations next week too (don't forget to keep an eye out for mini pumpkins decorated by our staff when you visit the building!) Consistent with all of the elementary schools, we do request that students refrain from wearing costumes to school on Halloween itself and keep them for parties and trick-or-treating that will occur outside of school. Thank you for you help with this. I have included some safety tips from the Lexington Police Dept. below those of you who may go out to celebrate either over the weekend or on Monday. Be safe and have fun!!

We also had our second ALL HAWKS meeting this week and below you will see a video of two of our second grade students singing Happy Birthday in Mandarin to students and staff celebrating October birthdays.

Enjoy the upcoming beautiful weekend weather!

Warm regards,

Jackie

Big Backyard Volunteers- THANK YOU!!

Thank you to all of the parents who volunteered for Big Backyard!!! Over the past month, all six grade levels have gone out for a nature walk, kindergarten through 5th grade, or 21 classes total. Nearly 100 parents participated and we couldn’t do it without you. Thanks to those parents, the students learned parts of plants and planted daffodil bulbs, looked for signs of animals, explored properties of soil, learned about how Indigenous peoples used some of these plants before Europeans got here, practiced being good observers and nature scientists, and examined trees in their ecosystems. Thank you parents!

The winter walks will take place in January and February. We will get those Signup Genius links ready by Thanksgiving. Meanwhile, happy outdoor exploring in a place near you!

Let's Celebrate!! Harrington's International Cultural Evening and Potluck is on November 5th at 6pm - We look forward to seeing you there...

Student Affinity Groups

Student Affinity Groups will be relaunching and we're looking for a few more parent/guardian support! There will be groups representing the Muslim, Indian, and Asian heritages. Affinity groups are open to all interested 4th or 5th grade students and are co-led by staff and family. Each group will occur about once a month and will host activities and discussions that focus on these heritages in order to support identity or understanding. If you're a parent/guardian who is interested in helping or if you have questions, please contact Mr. Wan (hwan@lexingtonma.org).
