SLE Weekly Update May 6, 2022
Good afternoon East families,
We celebrated Teacher Appreciation Week this week. We are very thankful to have such a dedicated, caring, and knowledgeable group of teachers with us here at East! They are a continual reminder of what it really means to BE EAST!
As the school year comes to a close, we have several items to communicate out to students and their families. Please make sure to read this newsletter in its entirety. It is full of exciting end-of-year events as well as some summer opportunities.
Happy Mother's Day to all of our East moms out there! We thank you for entrusting your children to us and we hope that you have a wonderful weekend with your families!
Thank you,
East Administration

SAT/PSAT Scores
SAT and PSAT Spring testing scores are starting to be released this week. Students can login to their College Board accounts to view their scores. Schools will not have access to scores until this summer.
A message from College Board:
Scores will be released to students in their College Board accounts beginning on the dates shown. Some students' scores may be released later due to testing in the accommodated testing window, missing information on the answer sheet, answer sheets received late, or other exceptional conditions that require additional attention. Scores for these students will be released as they become available.
Use of Wand Detector for Searches
From time to time, it is necessary to conduct a search of a student and/or their personal belongings. In the school context, that means a student can only be personally searched if there is reasonable suspicion to justify the search. In other words, if the school administration has selected a student for a search, that selection should only be made if the school administration has reasonable suspicion to believe the student has an illegal object or substance on their person (or in their backpack, etc.).
South Lyon Community Schools (SLCS) Board Policy 2006 states the following related to student searches:
“Locker and Other Searches Lockers provided to students are the property of the School District and students and others have no expectation of privacy with respect to the lockers or their contents. School District principals and their designees may search student lockers at any time for any reason and may request the assistance of local law enforcement personnel. When conducting locker searches, School District personnel will respect the privacy rights of students regarding items found that are not illegal or possession of which is not in violation of School District policy. Any searches of personal property on school grounds will be conducted in a manner consistent with applicable legal standards.”
South Lyon East, Centennial Middle, and Millennium Middle will soon be piloting the use of a wand detector when performing some student searches. The detector wand will mainly be used in instances when a search involves the possession of a weapon. The use of a wand detector can provide for a more effective and less intrusive search. Persons with pacemakers, implanted defibrillators, and spinal stimulators should alert administrators/law enforcement if they have one of these devices. The wand will be kept away from that area, or an alternative search may be conducted. Please contact a school administrator if you have any questions regarding student searches or the use of a wand detector.
