The Hiawatha Buzz!

Growing hearts and minds for a better today and tomorrow: every day, every way, every one.
Principal's Message
Dear families,
The warm weather has brought us outside more! This week classes spent time outside learning, reading, cleaning up our playground and field, and even doing some Four Winds activities like listening for bird calls. There was "quite a lot of chatter from the birds" this week as one student pointed out to me. I hope folks have a restful break and get outside and enjoy the first signs of spring!
Stay healthy and well,
Katherine
STOP DROP and READ!
Message from Ms. K in the Music room!
This spring we are discovering, creating, singing and playing music in a lot of fun ways!
Kindergarten and first grade students have been exploring the sights and sounds of spring. We have sung songs and created movement with flowers and animal themes. With all the rain, we have used various percussion instruments to explore rain sounds and practice steady beat. And of course, we have played musical games that build singing and ensemble skills in a fun way. It’s wonderful to see students’ creativity and independence flourish as they become more musically confident!
First and second grade musicians are diving into the wonderful world of rhythm patterns! They started off with words that have one or two sounds, identifying and creating patterns with those words. This will be followed by quarter and eighth notes in place of words. Soon students will be reading, playing and composing rhythms independently!
Third graders did a wonderful job learning about Spring from The Four Seasons by Antonio Vivaldi. Through this piece they learned about musical form, creating scarf movements to demonstrate the different sections of the piece. I was amazed by the colorful, unique choreography they created! We are now learning about instrument families in the orchestra. Students are very curious about the instruments and are enjoying discovering more about them.

Message from the Art room!
Hiawatha artists have been getting their hands pretty dirty recently while working with clay! They have been learning studio techniques like "slip and score", as well as the process of how clay is dug up from the ground and then transformed into unique ceramic works of art. Kindergartners are making textured pinch-pots. First-grade sculptors are making pinch-pot creatures inspired by the book Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak. Second-grade sculptors are making coil pots inspired by the book, The Pot That Juan Built by Nancy Andrews-Goebel. Third-grade sculptors are making slab-built fairy/gnome-style houses. The creativity is really flowing in the art room!
First-grade students demonstrate their ROY G. BIV knowledge with the creation of colorful rainbow mosaics! They are enjoying the process of creating new shapes with smaller shapes. When students finish their projects and have assessed if they have done their best work, they can then do another favorite thing.. free draw!!!
Students are very excited about their Square1Art stickers and catalogs coming home! This year students chose what to create, as well as the medium used. Each student planned carefully, worked hard, and took their time. Students really put their best work into these drawings and it's wonderful to see each unique personality shine through.
