Play, Learn, and Grow in 4K

Thank You for a Great School Year

Dear Parents,

I want to thank each family for all the warmth, the memories, and the learning that we have shared this school year.

To my students I say THANK YOU! For when I teach, I also learn. This past year we have grown together. A little bit of each of you will always be with me. Always strive to be the BEST that you can be!

To the parents, I say THANK YOU for allowing me to be your child’s teacher. Even though they would have grown without my help, it has been a pleasure to watch their personalities grow day by day and to see how they have developed in their learning. It has been a wonderful and rewarding year for me. I will always have a special place in my heart for your child!

Have a wonderful summer!

26 Big Things Small Hands Do

This week the children and I reflected on all of the things they have learned this school year. We began by reading the story, 26 Big Things Small Hands Do, by Coleen Partore. This helped us to think back all the way to September to create a list of all the growth and learning they accomplished this year. The children were so amazed and proud of themselves for all the hard work. Mrs. Kaufman and I are also very proud that our little 4Kers are all ready for Kindergarten! We know there is SO much more, but this is all we could fit on one paper :)
Big picture

Literacy

Over the past few weeks the children have been exploring the concept that letters can be put together to form words. We have been doing word puzzles, exploring with magnetic letters and even writing words in our very own word books. This is a pretty exciting concept for our little ones who are ready to start reading!

Math

The children have begun to work informally with addition and subtraction within 5. We have used stories, skits and concrete materials, like mini animal counters, to identify the special features of each operation. At this age, children need to engage in active addition and subtraction situations as they act out the operation scenarios. We use words children are familiar with like get in, join, put together, stack together or eat, break, jump away or swim away. While we read addition and subtraction stories from a book the children use their mini counters to represent the story or act out a skit in front of their peers.

Field Day

On Monday, June 10th the 4K students will participate in field day activities. Please send your child to school with socks and shoes that day, otherwise they will not be able to participate in all the games. I would also recommend sending a water bottle for them to take to the playground and applying sunscreen BEFORE coming to school. We are looking forward to a beautiful day of fun and games!!

Yell and Tell Program

This week the children were introduced to the Yell and Tell Program. This programs aims to teach children how to respond to dangerous situations around water, fire and poison. All of this comes at a time when we are transitioning into summer where children have more free time and opportunities to explore around their home and neighborhoods. The children will be bringing home little booklets that you can read together to reinforce the ideas that the program teaches. It also comes with a very catchy song that you may hear your child singing.
