Curriculum Updates
Language Arts
Last week, we read the story titled Teachers Pets and focused on story structure. We also learned about singular and plural nouns as well as words with blends. This week in language arts we are working on writing, so we are taking a break from our regular weekly story and spelling words. That means the students will not have a list to study this week and no test! Next week, we will start having a challenge list for those who master the words on the pretest. Students should study whichever list is sent home with them on Monday. We are writing opinion pieces for fall. They will be on display in the hall for conferences!
Math
We have started topic three which introduces different strategies for adding two-digit numbers. Students will learn how to add using a hundreds chart, open number line, using the break apart strategy as well as compensation. Many of these strategies are new to students at first and can be frustrating, but we will practice often! There is math homework coming home tonight and that will be it for the week. This is due by Wednesday. It is okay if your second grader needs some assistance with the homework. Any night there is not a homework assignment is a great night to practice those addition and subtraction facts! Students who have their facts memorized are able to complete the two-digit addition problems much more efficiently.
Science
In science, we finished our first investigation on air when we did balloon rockets last week. The students did a nice job on the assessment and I will share those with you at conferences. Our second investigation is on observing the weather. We will start tracking the weather each day in our journals, make some model thermometers, learn about different cloud types, and how a rain gauge is used.
Social Studies
In social studies, we are continuing lesson two which discusses the three different types of communities: urban, suburban, and rural. Ask your child if they remember the action for each kind! The students are doing a nice job classifying what types of things would be found in each type of community.
