FROM THE CO-DIRECTORS
It's the fifth week of the 2016-2017 school year! Please take a few minutes to read through the information below.
First Family School Collaborative Meeting
Our first Family School Collaborative (FSC) meeting of the school year is THIS THURSDAY, October 6th, from 6:00-7:30PM. The FSC is our version of a PTA or PTO. We welcome all Compass family members, community members, and staff to join us as we launch our work for the 2016-2017 school year.
Catered dinner from Chipotle will be provided for all who attend and there will be childcare for all children (not just those attending Compass, so feel free to bring your older and/or younger children as well).
This meeting will be held in the cafeteria on the ground floor.
We're looking forward to seeing you all there!
Our Healthy School Fund
Every year, Compass pays for a healthy snack for your children, as well as two lice check-ups by a lice removal company (including follow-up consultations), weekly cleaning service of the rags, towels, and other linens used across the school, and a number of cleaning supplies to keep our classrooms and common spaces clean. In response to student, teacher, and family concerns that students are leaving school hungry at the end of the day, this year we are adding a second snack in the afternoon. These items cost Compass $30 a month per child (or a total of $300 a year per child), and we ask families to pay for these expenses (also known as the Healthy School Fund).
In the future, this information will be included in a Back to School packet that we will send out in August.
Various ways you can make payments to Compass (for the Healthy Snack Fund, t-shirts, school lunches) include:
- Mail or hand-deliver a Cash, Check, or Money Order to Todd or Chelsea (For the time being, please only give money to these two Compass employees. Haleema, our new Finance Manager, will be setting up a new process for receiving funds in the near future.)
- Venmo: username = compasscharter
- Square Cash = send your contribution to Todd’s work email address: email@example.com.
- Here are slightly sophisticated directions for how to setup an automatic payment through Square Cash if that helps you.
- Chase QuickPay = send your contribution to Todd’s work email address: firstname.lastname@example.org. Chase's platform allows you to easily setup a recurring payment.
- Online: https://brooklyncompass.org/donate/
We hope to identify a platform that makes it easy for all of you to schedule electronic payments if you wish, thereby removing the need to remember each month. Thank you for covering the expense of keeping the school a little bit cleaner and your child a little better fed. Please let us know if you have questions about the Healthy School Fund.
Social Emotional Learning (Cross-Age Buddy Program)
During our staff professional development time this week our staff will plan for the launch of our new cross-age buddy program. This is an element of the Caring School Community program and something we have been looking forward to launching since before our school opened. Each child will have a buddy in another grade and buddies will meet on Wednesdays after Community Gathering to do an activity together. Kindergarten children will be paired with second grade buddies and first grade children will be paired with third grade buddies.
Our staff will be planning the first few buddy activities this week and we will make time for the buddies to get to know one another and then they will engage in a learning activity together. Buddies will do different tasks each week such as interviewing one another, reading together, making art, writing, or doing a math project.
The goal of the buddy program is for all children to have a strong relationship with a child of a different age. This program also brings teachers from different grades together to plan learning activities, which can lead to more consistency in the approach to teaching and learning across the school. Buddy time will also give all children authentic experiences in using the social emotional skills they are learning through the Caring School Community program.
The cross age buddy program will launch on Wednesday, October 19th.
We hope you all have a great week!
Brooke, Michelle, and Todd
Save the Date: First Family School Collaborative Meeting
Thursday, Oct. 6th, 6-7:30pm
Join us on October 6th at 6pm for this year's first Family School Collaborative meeting! We'll be discussing our goals for this year and forming committees for our upcoming fall events. Dinner will be served and babysitting will be provided. We're looking forward to it and hope to see all of you there!
Save the Date: Curriculum Night
Thursday, Oct. 13th, 6-8pm
300 Adelphi Street
Compass Curriculum Night is an evening dedicated to sharing our approach to teaching and learning at our school. Our teachers will provide an outline of our curricular plans for the year as well as reflections from the first few weeks of school. There will also be time to ask questions.
Curriculum Night is an important event and we request to have at least one person from each child's family present to learn more about our curriculum and expectations for the children at our school. Please let us know if you have any questions.
We will meet in the auditorium from 6:00-6:30 as an entire school community and then families will disperse to the classrooms for curriculum presentations by the teachers.
Childcare will be provided. Children can be dropped off for childcare beginning at 5:45pm.
This Week's Morning Snack Menu
Breakfast and Lunch Menus
In addition to a morning and afternoon snack, we also offer two meal times during the school day.
Breakfast is free for all of our students. All children who arrive on the school bus have an opportunity to eat breakfast at school. If your family does not use the school bus, you are welcome to drop your child off in the cafeteria for breakfast at 7:30AM.
Hot lunch costs $1.25 a day for children who do not qualify for free or reduced price lunch. Children who do not have lunch from home will be served a hot lunch. You do not need to send money with your child or sign up for hot lunch ahead of time.
At the end of October, we will be sending email invoices to those families who owe money for the meals their children consumed, and we will begin sending monthly reminders for the rest of the year.

Communication for Families Regarding School Bus Service
In an effort to facilitate real-time communication with parents about busing, we are adding all families that use busing to "Remind" this week. Remind is a messaging service that lets us communicate with families via text message. We will create groups by bus route, so you will be added to 2 groups if your child takes the bus in morning and afternoon. You can unsubscribe yourself at any time (instructions are forthcoming).
We will use the group to send announcements if a bus running late, if we know of a driver substitute, or any other update that will be useful in the moment. If you prefer to receive these messages via email instead, please let Laurie know (Laurie@brooklyncompass.org or 646-618-0474). If your phone number or email changes, please let Laurie know as well.
In the upcoming weeks, we will add all families to Remind for school-wide announcements and alerts.
We're recycling snack and drink pouches to raise money for our school!
Any brand of snack or drink pouches can be collected (not just the brands featured in the images below). We will have a collection bucket available during lunch each day. We also encourage you to save pouches at home and to drop them off in the Terracycle bins in the Community Room. We are able to accept any food pouches (baby food, applesauce, other fruit/veggie/yogurt snack pouches) and drink pouches.
Please let us know if you have questions. Thanks for your help!
We're collecting Box Tops to raise money for our school...and there is a new Bonus App
Compass has a super easy way for YOU to help earn cash for our school: BOX TOPS!
Just look for the pink "Box Tops" label on hundreds of products. You can find them on Cheerios, Annie's, Cascadian Farms, Betty Crocker, Progresso soups, Ziploc brands...among others! Click HERE to see a full list of participating products.
All you have to do is clip them and send them to school with your child. There are collection cans located outside each classroom.
Then we collect them and send them in twice per year --- and they send us a check! Each box top is worth 10¢!!! It adds up quickly!
Please note that there are expiration dates on the tops so please check before sending in.
Also, please download the new Box Tops Bonus App for double box tops of some products. Money will be added electronically to our Box Tops account each time you use the app. Click HERE to find out more and take a look at the image below to learn more.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact either of us. We're here to help make our school’sBox Tops for Education™ program a huge success this year.

No DoE-Busing on Columbus and Veterans Day
Looking ahead to October and November, please mark your calendars and plan for the fact that there are no DoE yellow busses provided on Monday, October 10 and Friday, November 11. Unfortunately, you will be expected to get your child to school through other means. We apologize for this inconvenience.
