Message from Principal Polomsky
Elmwood Parents & Community~
This time of year is a time to be thankful and what better time to send thanks to all of you for your continuous support to Elmwood. We remain thankful each day for the time we have to spend with your children. At this time, we are celebrating another exemplary year together filled with many new and cherished memories. Elmwood is a special place and we have all of you to thank for sending your children to us each day. We couldn’t do the important work that we do as educators’ without your partnership and support.
Thank you for working with us to #Make A Difference this year!
Yours Truly,
Lisa Polomsky

HOT OFF THE PRESS
A shout out to the following:
- Movie Night- Our first Movie Night of the year was a great success! It was fun seeing Elmwood students enjoying a night of popcorn, treats and friends at Elmwood School! Thank you to all the parents who volunteered their time to run concessions, set up/tear down, and help make the event a great time for all!
- We celebrated Veterans Day this past Monday. Thank you to all the Veterans who attended and for your continued service to our country. We were glad to be able to honor and recognize you! Thanks also to our Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts for escorting Veterans to the gym and for making Patriotic signs to decorate our assembly.
Winter Wear Coat Drive
A genuine and heartfelt THANK YOU to our SFCP leaders (Jess & Libby) and to everyone who was able to donate a winter item to a student in need this season. Last Friday, our students were invited to come into the staff lounge to select their own items (coat, snow pants, boots, hats & mittens etc.). The smiles on the students' faces were priceless as they were so grateful for your kindness. Thank you again for #MakingADifference
Rake & Run
With the cold weather had last weekend, it became a last minute decision on whether we were going to 'rake' leaves or shovel drives last Saturday and RAKING won! Thank you to our SFCP leaders (Libby & Jess) and to all of our Elmwood students and their families who woke up early to rake the leaves our community members. This annual event is one of my favorites as it's a great way to teach our children what it means to give back to the community.
Report Card
Report Cards were made available to parents TODAY at Noon via the Student Document System. To view report cards, please go to the Infinite Campus Portal link found in quick links on the Elmwood Webpage. For helpful information about viewing your students report card, please click here.
Kindergarten and First Grade Notice
Kindergarten Preview will be on Friday, March 8, 2019! We want to be sure that we have every student’s name in order for materials to be sent prior to that date. If you have a child who will be five (5) years old ON OR BEFORE SEPTEMBER 1, 2018, or if you have a neighbor with a child who will be five (5) years old on or before September 1, 2018, please call the Elmwood School Office 630-420-6341. Also, if you have a child attending another Kindergarten program who will be starting First Grade at Elmwood in Fall 2018, please notify us as soon as possible. This information is vital for our planning.
Winter Weather/Cold Weather Recess:
District temperature guidelines that are in place for cold weather recess can be found in your Student/Parent Handbook (p.12). This information is shared with our community as a reminder to ensure that your children come to Elmwood each day dressed appropriately for the weather. Please know that we will continue to monitor the weather daily and make decisions in alignment with our District practice; however, we will always consider the safety of our students. Hats, gloves & a warm coat will let you enjoy recess on the blacktop when SNOW is on the ground. BUT….. Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd and 3rd Graders are asked to bring boots and snow pants to enjoy all of the snow. Our Elmwood rule for this is….NO boots, NO snow pants = NO Snow. We trust that our 4th and 5th Graders can make wise decisions and we are leaving their attire up to them and continue to just ask that they dress appropriately for the weather to play outside. Please understand that when we go outside… all of our recess supervisors go outside with the students. If a student is not dressed appropriately for the weather, we don’t have a supervisor inside that can hang out with your child. We ask that you please help us out and remind your kids of this. Many of our boys enjoy wearing ‘short’s when it’s bitter cold outside BUT…let it be known that it’s not usually the boys that ask to come inside to get warm… it’s the girls who appear to be bundled up but maybe they need some more bundling. Thank you again for your cooperation and please continue to send your children bundled up and ready for the weather.

5Essentials Survey
As a parent or guardian of one or more students attending Naperville Community Unit School District 203, your feedback is requested via participation in the annual statewide Illinois 5Essentials Survey. The purpose of this online survey is to understand parent/guardian perceptions in the areas of connectedness, satisfaction, interaction, involvement, and quality. Your participation and ratings on this survey are confidential; the district will only receive district or school level results if at least 20% of parents/guardians participate. The results of this survey will be used to understand areas of strength and challenge at the district and school level based on your input and feedback. Families with students attending more than one school are asked to complete the survey for each school individually. To access the survey, please click here https://survey.5-essentials.org/illinois/. Please select “Dupage” as the County. Lastly, please complete this survey by Friday, February 15, 2019 and thank you for your participation. Patrick W. Nolten, Ph.D. Assistant Superintendent for Assessment and Accountability

ColorCyle
Elmwood is going to participate in a very special program with Crayola. It’s called Crayola ColorCycle – an amazing new program devised to turn used markers into energy! All around Elmwood students and teachers will be collecting used markers that are ready to be discarded. The markers will be sent to a facility where they will be converted into clean fuel. This fuel can be used to power vehicles, heat homes, cook meals and more! Please help support our efforts by sending your kids in with any used markers you may have around the house – even non-Crayola brands. Drop-off boxes will be located around the school for your child to deposit the markers. Thank you in advance for participating! With the help of parents like you across the country, the Crayola ColorCycle program can keep tons of plastic out of landfills each year. Remember, don’t throw out that used marker—ColorCycle it!
Donate Small Toys to Elmwood
THANK YOU to the many parents who have already made a donation! We will accept donations all year, so keep them coming!! Remember... "One's trash is another one's treasure!" :) Thanks in advance for your donation!
Donate Recess Equipment to Elmwood
We are always in need of equipment- if you have any extra balls in your garage that you would like to loan our playgrounds, we would gladly take footballs, kick balls, soccer balls, basketballs, jump ropes. Your student can bring it to the main office for us to label and put into our bins. Thank you!
