February Conferences

Each year, we have two "official" chances for families to meet with teachers to talk about your student(s). The next dates are February 22 and 23. Please sign up for a conference with each child's teacher by clicking this link.

The link takes you to a Sign-up Genius (same as in the past), but please notice that the first page that opens is Mrs. Henneberry's 5K class. For all other classes, you must scroll across the tabs at the top to find your child's homeroom teacher.

Our goal is to meet with EVERY family. You can help us meet our goal and get valuable information about your child's growth by signing up right away. Thank you!

Admiral's Game Field Trip

For those of you who have been at Lakeview for many years, you might remember that Lakeview went to a special Admiral's hockey game for an all-school field trip. We have not gone since pre-Covid, but this year, we are going! All 5K through 5th grade students will go to a daytime Admiral's hockey game on Wednesday, March 1. Permission slips are coming home - there are two forms to return to school along with the $10 cost. One of the papers (this one) gives information about lunch and chaperones. Please check your student's folder and return these forms and payment as soon as possible.

Lakeview Concert

Dear Families,

We have begun preparing for Lakeview’s Annual Spring Concert! This year’s concert theme is “Change Sings.” All of our songs connect to the themes in Amanda Gorman’s poem “Change Sings,” like kindness, tolerance, hope, and love!

This special event will take place on Wednesday, March 22 , 2023, at 6:30 p.m. in the South Milwaukee Performing Arts Center (High School). Save the date! All students from 5K through 5th grade are in the concert.

You can find more information about our concert and the songs your student(s) is preparing by visiting this webpage.

Thank you!

Mrs. Tinsen

State Testing Dates

If you have a student in grades 3, 4, or 5, please be aware that our state test (the Forward test) will be given between April 3rd through April 14th. This is right after spring break. Students in grades 3-5 have several hours of testing to complete, and we do a little bit of testing each day. It helps if students are in school those days so we do not need to schedule make-up testing. Please avoid appointments and vacations between April 3-14 if at all possible. Thank you!

Help the SMPD get a Police Dog with a Coin War

We've collect 50 pounds of coins so far! If you are wondering, that is about half of a 5-gallon bucket of coins. The school that collects the most coins (by weight) before February 9 wins a pizza party courtesy of our local heroes in the South Milwaukee Police Department! PLUS ... our police department can get a police dog, so the entire community wins when you donate coins.

Big picture

5th Grade Camp Information

Every year, 5th grade students go to camp for 3 days (2 nights). We sent this letter to all 5th grade families in September. This year, camp is on May 3, 4, and 5 at Camp Anokijig in Plymouth, WI. There is a lot of information about camp that we need to communicate to families as we prepare for this great experience. Someone from every 5th grade family should plan to join a virtual information meeting on Monday, February 13 from 5:30-6:15 p.m. using your student's Chromebook. The 5th grade teachers will provide a link to the Google Meet - all you need to do is mark your calendar and listen to the meeting.

PTO Dance

The next PTO Dance is on Thursday, February 2nd in the Lakeview gym from 6:00-8:00 p.m. The theme is "Glow Dance" and everyone will get a glow bracelet. This flyer from the PTO gives more information about the dance. A few reminders:

• Students must be accompanied by an adult who stays the entire time

• Only Lakeview students may participate. This is not for older siblings or students.

• Students must stay in the gym (not in the hallway and not outside the building)

• School cell phone rules apply (students are not allowed to be using cell phones during dance)

The dance itself is free, and there will be food available for purchase as well as a basket raffle and a 50/50 raffle. We need your help to provide donations for the basket raffle. The basket themes are:

4K basket - arts and crafts

5K basket - books & stuffed animals (Snuggle Up and Read)

1st basket - baking

2nd basket - outdoor

3rd basket - lego

4th basket - family game night

5th basket - sports

Please come to enjoy the community and support our Lakeview PTO!

4K Registration for 2023-24 is open

Do you have a student who will be 4 years old on or before September 1, 2024? If so, then register him/her for 4K right now. Families that register now have a better chance of getting one of the all-day 4K spot in South Milwaukee. If you have a relative or neighbor that might have an eligible child, share this information with them.

Click here for information about South Milwaukee's 4K program. Contact the office if you have questions and register now.

Mark your calendars for a really fun night of learning at South Milwaukee High School. If you attended literacy night in the past, this is similar, but this year it is STEAM night.

There will be so many exciting activities that evening:

  • A Wacky Science Show

  • Bowling ball races

  • Science experiments that ooze, bubble and blast off

  • Counting collections

  • Electronic greeting card make & take

  • Library learning centers

  • Breakout EDU

  • The Fab Lab will be open

  • Food sampling

  • There will be lots of student work on display- including the 4th grade Invention Convention and 2nd grade nonfiction books.

  • The all-district elementary art show will be this night as well! Every student (5K-5th grade) will have a piece of artwork on display at STEAM night

We’ll even have a light dinner for your family to enjoy!

A note came home recently for your family to sign and return to school or you can RSVP by clicking this link.

Golden Lions

This week at Lakeview, we gave out many Pride Perks coupons, but also 9 special Golden Lions to recognize our Be Safe ~ Be Respectful ~ Be Engaged expectations. Here are the Golden Lions for this week:

• WOW! Kassidy rocked comparing fish lengths in math this week. She should be very proud of her work!

• Frankie is always engaged in our lessons and has so many good things to share with us about so many things!! Keep it up, Frankie! You are amazing:)

• Julio coached a kindergarten student in kicking a ball. When the other student was successful, Julio gave him a high five with praise. Then he went to another kindergarten student to give her an opportunity to practice kicking the ball. So proud of Julio's kindness and consideration towards others to be successful! Thank you, Julio!

• In the morning, Ms. Nicholson's class came into their classroom very quietly and respectfully while Ms. Nicholson was engaged in a virtual meeting. Way to go, Ms. Nicholson's class in showing the respect your teacher needed to be able to attend her meeting! So proud of you!

• Alex showed great responsibility today. He had been absent and immediately came in starting on the work he missed. He listened diligently during lessons and asked good questions so that he was making sure he was understanding the instruction he missed. Alex I was so impressed with your attitude, you could have easily been overwhelmed but you just kept chunking away at things and using every resource you could to jump right back in.

• Liam has done a great job in recent weeks of being aware of how he is able to stay engaged in his learning. He has been making excellent choices with where to sit on the carpet during our mini-lessons and is fully engaging in the learning by attempting the work and asking questions when he is confused. Way to go, Liam!

• Autumn has been doing a great job with self-starting her Lexia work each day. Additionally, she checks in to be sure she is completing the work correctly and is able to stay so engaged she is completing at least 4 units each work session. Way to go, Autumn!

• During phonics and writing yesterday, Gabby was so focused. She raised her hand every time I asked a question, worked hard to apply our spelling rules in her writing, and took evaluating her work and setting a goal seriously. I'm so proud of you for taking responsibility for your learning. Keep it up, Gabby!

• Bentley went out of way to help a classmate today during our math lesson. He noticed a classmate needed help tying their shoe, politely asked the student if they'd like help, and then kindly tied the show. Thank you for recognizing when others need help and being willing to step in, even for the "small things."
