Canby School District News
December 18, 2018
Dear Canby Families:
As we all get ready for winter break and the holiday season, I want to take this opportunity to thank you for trusting us with the care and education of your student. It is a privilege to serve the students and families in this district, and it is a responsibility we all take very seriously. Your support and partnership contribute to our success. Thank you.
Winter break may feel like the halfway point in the school year, but we don’t actually reach that point until January 31. We’re seeing strong classroom instruction and new strategies to engage our students. Our staff is committed to professional development in these areas to help improve student achievement, Goal One of our Academic Vision.
Here’s just one example: the math team at Canby High School committed to using interactive notebooks as part of our AVID program. AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a program dedicated to closing the achievement gap by preparing all students for college and career. AVID uses proven, research-based strategies to help students sort and remember information and connect to their learning.
These notebooks act as sort of a personalized textbook for each student and contain interaction between the teacher and student. The math team’s interactive notebooks are working. During the first trimester, students showed considerable improvement over the same period last year. We’re pleased to see this level of growth among our students and our staff. Teachers had to learn some things to implement this strategy. It just goes to show that lifelong learning can have a significant impact on all of us.
I’m grateful to lead a school district where learning is a shared responsibility. Thank you for all you do to help your student learn. Whether it’s getting your student to school or volunteering in the classroom, you play a huge role in your student’s success. I look forward to a strong finish to the first half of our school year when students return to class on January 3, 2019.
Happy Holidays!

Please be sure your contact information is up-to-date with your school office so you can receive important alerts about any delays or closures due to the weather. You can read all about how the decision is made to delay or close school on our website.
Calendars
Winter break begins tomorrow. There will be no classes for students from December 19 through January 2. Students return to class on January 3, 2019. All schools and the district office will be closed during winter break.

Serving Smiles
Our Nutrition Services department has been “serving up smiles” this month. Staff served “smile fries” to our elementary students who purchased school lunch. If that wasn’t enough to put a smile on your face, these guest servers might. Firefighters from Aurora Fire District served up the snacks at Ninety-One School. Canby Fire did the same at Lee. We want to thank them and all the other guest servers for sharing their time and their smiles.
