The 5 C's of Teaching
5 C's of Teaching, Not Technology Integration, Because Technology Should Naturally Be a Part of Teaching
Shift from the Information Age to the Conceptual Age
Similar to the Age of Enlightenment, the Information Age has resulted in an immersion of information. The introduction of the internet, smartphones, and social media has made information easy to obtain without requiring any deductive reasoning or critical thinking. Daniel H. Pink author of A Whole New Mind discusses the idea of how our society is moving from the Informational Age into the Conceptual.
The Conceptual Age will be a result of the need for us to not just know the answers, but also become innovative with the knowledge we are gaining. Intelligence will occur from taking in knowledge and getting messy with it. We will have to pull knowledge apart, stretch it out, mix it up, and make the knowledge not just your own but new.
The 5 C's... What is that About?
1. Communication (sharing thoughts, questions, and ideas in an intellectual way)
2. Collaboration (working together to meet a goal)
3. Creativity (Innovation, trying new things or presenting in a new way)
4. Critical Thinking (Problem Solving)
5. Connection ( with each other and with previous material)
I have added connection, because deeper learning occurs when the student connects the new information to an emotion, a person, or previous knowledge.
Making the 5 C's Come Alive
Strategically planning your lessons and incorporating technology in the right places can make your lessons come to life.
Let us look at some lessons:
Character Traits -
· Have students use eBackpack or Padlet to create a list of character traits of two characters you have been reading about in class. This would be a great introduction that can be completed at home or at the end of a previous lesson.
· Junior High and High School- You can review the qualities of a compare and contrast essay. Make them aware of the rubric you will be using to assess them. Have them work collaboratively to develop graphic organizers of what should be included in the writing example. Have them create a proper 3-5 paragraph essay (depending on what grade you are teaching)
· Another option would be to allow them to create a character blog; fake Facebook...let your mind wonder. You may even want to access Blogmeister or you could do this in Publisher and post to eBackpack. When they are finished, have them do a peer review using these questions.
· Elementary- Create Word Clouds for each character together. Have students pick another favorite character to create a word cloud to share. You can have them discuss their character, allow other students to question them about the traits they chose, and why. You could pair students up and have them write a paragraph comparing and contrasting the two characters or simply have them circle characteristics that are similar in one color and different in another color.
