The Acorn
Message from Academy of the Canyons' Principal, Dr. Fine
Week of 4/10
Greetings AOC Families,
Here is the student bulletin for the week of 4/10. I hope that all of you enjoyed your Spring Break! We look forward to seeing our students tomorrow, on April 11th when we return back to school!
Assembly member Suzette Valladares has scheduled a visit to our campus this week and was the first politician to actively support AOC when we challenged SB-328. As our local representative of the Santa Clarita Valley, she helped us organize conversations with Senator Wilk, Senator Portantino, and the California Department of Education and prioritized our school's work. She will visit us this Wednesday, 4/13 and take a tour of AOC as our local representative.
Have a fantastic week! Please reach out with any questions.
Sincerely,
Dr. Juliet Fine
Principal of AOC

Good News! AOC Ranked #16 in the state of "California for being one of the Best Public Schools"
We are so incredibly proud of our students and staff for earning a ranking of #16 as one of the "Best Public Schools in the State of California". “Stacker compiled a list of the best public high schools in California using rankings from Niche. Here’s how it breaks down: Niche uses eight factors for its rankings, with each factor given a different weight. A whopping 60% of the score is based on academics and grades, which is calculated using state assessment proficiency tests, SAT/ACT scores, and survey responses. From there, culture and diversity, parent and student surveys on their overall experiences, and teachers each contribute to 10% of the score. Finally, scores for each school’s clubs and activities, health and safety, resources and facilities, and sports constitute 2.5% each.”
We are thankful for this recognition and are most proud of students' and staff's hard work, our ongoing partnership and collaboration with the College of the Canyons (COC), and for the support of our parents and community. See the article below for more details.

Introducing the San Fernando and Santa Clarita Valley Youth Council-Leadership Opportunity
Matt Godsoe is the Campaign Manager for the Suzette Martinez-Valladares and Riley Chong is one of our team’s campaign interns and they have emailed our school offering an exciting opportunity for the students at the Academy of the Canyons.
They are currently recruiting students to join the inaugural San Fernando and Santa Clarita Valley Youth Council, an opportunity for students to engage in local politics and help influence policy within these two regions. The youth council is seeking 20 student leaders to join this inaugural cohort for a five-month term. Attached to this email is a flyer that we will post in our weekly announcement. Additionally, there is an information document that addresses all the details about the youth council and questions that students may ask should they be interested in joining the council. A link to the application is below. We will also post a bit.ly link on the flyer.
They look forward to reading about our students’ passions and interests and they truly hope that our students feel encouraged to apply to this incredible opportunity!
It's an amazing local leadership opportunity for any students interested in government, politics or law. Here is the link to the application: https://forms.gle/p5HabQS3EhAYm24H7
