SUMMER NEWSLETTER
We hope that you enjoy the remaining days of the summer holiday.
Here at FSA, we are very excited about the new school year.
Many of you probably have noticed some great additions to our leadership team for this new year. I would like to summarize them for you.
Our department head positions continue to remain the same. However since we have many new families joined our school, I still would like to share them with you.
Math Department Chair - Mrs. Sema Duzyol - sduzyol@fultonscienceacademy.org
Science Department Chair - Mr. Yasin Parlak - yparlak@fultonscienceacademy.org
World Languages Chair - Mrs. Nadia Carmona - ncarmona@fultonscienceacademy.org
Social Studies Chair - Mrs. Kelley Rodgers - krodgers@fultonscienceacademy.org
Language Arts Chair - Mr. Christopher Craig - ccraig@fultonscienceacademy.org
Specials - Mr. Yasin Kaya - ykaya@fultonscienceacademy.org
As you know, we had a counselor at our school helping our students with both school counseling and college counseling last year. I am pleased to inform you that we have two amazing counselors this year.
School Counselor - Mrs. Ann Cantrell - acantrell@fultonscienceacademy.org
College Counselor - Mrs. Devi Selvakumar - dselvakumar@fultonscienceacademy.org
Our admin team now includes three new additions as well. Our wonderful elementary curriculum coordinator Mrs. Ivarie was introduced a while ago. Her e-mail address is kivarie@fultonscienceacademy.org.
As introduced two weeks ago, we also have an amazing assistant principal, Mrs. Michelle Todd added to our team to oversee school discipline and safety issues. Mrs. Todd will also assist in curriculum and instruction as she brings years of experience in gifted education. Her e-mail address is mtodd@fultonscienceacademy.org
We also added a new front office secretary to help Mrs. Condon and Mrs. Walsh. From now on, Mrs. Walsh will mainly focus on science olympiad and admission issues.
Our other wonderful administrators, Mr. Turan (nturan@fultonscienceacademy.org) and Mr. Parlak (yparlak@fultonscienceacademy.org), continue at their positions just like last year. While Mr. Parlak mainly works on high school issues, Mr. Turan oversees student services including student schedules, school events, activities, field trips an so on.
We are very excited about this year as we believe that we are starting the new school year with a very strong leadership team. It will be a wonderful year!

GREAT NEWS FOR FSA CHESS TEAM!
Dear Parents,
As you know, at Fulton Science Academy, we have some of the strongest chess player students not only in the state of Georgia but also in the nation. Last year many of our students won awards at the Chess Super-nationals.
We have great news for you! We are very pleased to inform you that Chess Grandmaster Ben Finegold will be coaching our advanced chess classes for players rated over 900 this year. On the other hand, our other wonderful chess coach, Carlos will continue to work with other chess students on Fridays just like last year.
GRANDMASTER BEN FINEGOLD
Grandmaster Ben Finegold learned the rules of chess at age 5 and received his first USCF rating at age 6. It wasn't long -- around his mid-teens -- until he realized he wanted to play chess professionally. GM Finegold's first major tournament win came in 1989 when he finished in a first-place tie at the U.S. Junior Closed Championship. He earned the title of International Master in 1990. The next year GM Finegold won his first major, international, Swiss-paired tournament in Antwerp, Belgium. In 1993, GM Finegold was awarded the Samford Chess Fellowship, an award given each year to the most talented chess player in the United States under the age of 26. In 1994, he finished in a six-way tie for first place at the U.S. Open in Chicago, and in 2002 he finished in a first-place tie with eight players at the World Open in Philadelphia where he secured his first GM norm. In 2009, after his 40th birthday, GM Finegold earned his final GM norm at the SPICE Cup in Lubbock, Texas. The “People’s Grandmaster” is one of the most popular chess lecturers, with many of his YouTube lectures receiving over 100,000 views. He is frequently the Resident GM and commentator at the Saint Louis Chess Club. He is co-owner of Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Atlanta, located in Roswell, GA in close proximity to FSAPS.
Advanced Chess Classes for Players Rated over 900 (exceptions: if your child is a regular tournament player, or if your child is a middle school or high schooler, he/she may also join the class, even if rating is lower than 900).
Cost per semester (15 weeks):
Class 1 - $250 per semester
Class 2 - (more advanced than Class 1) - $250 per semester
Class 1 and 2 - $350 total per semester
Classes will take place on Mondays: August 14, August 21, August 28, September 11, September 18, September 25, October 2, October 16, October 23, October 30, November 6, November 13, November 27, December 4, December 11.
Detailed information about this classes will be shared during orientation day along with other after school club schedules. There will also be presentation on Saturday, August 5th at 3:15pm.
For the registered students, payment can be done in two ways: bring a check to first class, made out to Ben Finegold. Or, you can pay via PayPal to kbthegreat@aol.com (Please use “Pay to Family/Friends” option).

NEW STUDENTS BAND & ORCHESTRA PROGRAM INSTRUMENT SELECTION - JULY 29 FROM 10AM TO NOON
We hope that you continue to have a great summer holiday.
At FSA, all students take either band or orchestra starting at 5th grade. If you need help with selecting your instrument for either band or orchestra program, please join us on Saturday, July 29th between 10am and 2pm.
We would like to clarify a few more things for you about our music program.
* If you have already made your selection of either band or orchestra and if you already know your instrument, then you do not need to come.
* If you need help with instrument selection but you cannot come on July 29th, then please work with Ken Stanton or any other music company directly. On the Ken Stanton website there is a specific link for Fulton Science Academy. They will be able to help you with instrument selection. http://www.kenstanton.net/band-orchestra-rentals/
* If your child is already playing another instrument which is not listed in our e-mail below and you do not want your child to change the instrument, that won't be a problem. We will accommodate you in our classes. We will not require students to begin a second instrument unless they are willing to. Playing one instrument is good enough for our student's college application.
* Band and Orchestra Classes will offered as follows:
- One Hour Band or Orchestra Class During the Week as part of Specials of Art, Computer, Music, Physical Education and PLTW.
- An Optional Zero Period Band and Orchestra During the Week between 7:25am and 8:05am. Zero period will begin after labor day.
* We will also offer band, orchestra, chorus and some other music clubs as after school clubs for those interested. The detailed club schedule will be shared during orientation day on August 4th.
* Private music classes will still be available at our school. Detailed information about private music classes will be shared soon.
If you have any other questions, please contact Dr. Hawk at ehawk@fultonscienceacademy.org

Summer Workbook Option
Many parents have asked for recommendations of practice books for your students to stay sharp over the summer months...
The Summer Skills Books include two different series of review books (math and language arts) for students from pre-k through high school. The foreign language series and Study Skills Sharpener book are for students in the 7th grade through high school. Each grade level book helps students maintain their academic skills over the summer months. Since their introduction in 1991, these books have benefited millions of students in over 20,000 schools nationwide.
Please visit http://www.summerskills.com/books for more information on how to order!
