Hamilton Boys' High School

Newsletter 1, February, 2019

Dear parents, homestay families and agents

It is my pleasure to send you our first International Newsletter for 2019.

The purpose of these newsletters is to help you feel connected to our school community and informed about upcoming events.

I will be posting photos of our International boys and sharing their journeys with you each month.

If you are a homestay family and you would like to share photos you have taken with your student, please send them to me.

I would like to extend a special welcome to our new international students. The past 3 weeks will have been a combination of excitement, nerves and confusion but I am really proud of their courage and positive attitude.

International Orientation Camp 8 - 10 March 2019

Attached is information about our International Camp coming up in March. ALL students are expected to attend the camp. It is a wonderful opportunity for our boys to get to know each other and to explore and experience New Zealand's beautiful scenery. The activities planned will encourage many of the boys to move out of their comfort zones while ensuring that they are completely safe at all times and looked after by our qualified Outdoor Education instructions and our International Centre staff.

Please read over the items required for the camp and help you son/student to get these items ready. Sunblock, hat, comfortable walking shoes, 2 towels and a sleeping bag are essential. Casual beachwear clothing only is needed and one warm layer of clothing in case the nights are cool.

The cost of the camp is taken from each student's contingency account. No additional payment is required.

Homestay Parents Information Evening Tuesday 19 February 6-7pm

This evening is our opportunity to welcome our new homestay families to our HBHS International community and to share the experiences of our returning homestay parents.

The meeting will take place in the school pavilion, the first building on the right as you enter the school from Peachgrove Road. There is parking directly in front of the pavilion. Take the stairs up to the meeting room.

Light refreshments will be provided.

NZQA end-of-year examination timetable and the school term dates

Attached is the examination timetable for Level 1, 2 and 3 NCEA examinations and Scholarship examinations. These examinations are for our senior students only. Our school term dates is also attached to assist you in booking mid-year flights if your son is returning home for school holidays.

Year 9 and 10 end-of-year activity week and camps

Our school year ends on Thursday the 5th of December for our Year 9 and 10 students. The final 4 days of our school year provide students with the opportunity to choose activities and camps outside of the classroom. Our Year 9 students take part in daily activities that can be school-based or involve travel to a location in the Waikato. Our Year 10 students can choose local adventures or travel to beautiful places in our North island. Opportunities like sailing, ocean fishing, hunting, mountain bike riding, learning to surf and aviation are a sample of the vast range of camp options offered.

The Year 9 activities week and the Year 10 camps are compulsory. Please do not book flights home for your son/student until the 5th of December or after. Absence from school prior to the 5th of December is regarded as condoned truancy.
