Weekly GUFS Newsletter
April 9, 2021
A Message from the Principal, Mrs. Emig
We hope everyone had a wonderful spring break with friends and family. We are all feeling recharged to end the year strong! With the beautiful weather approaching, we plan to spend more time outdoors during instruction. We will be getting more tents to provide shade and outdoor spaces for events and outdoor learning. We also want to thank you for your continued support with keeping our school safe and secure. Please enjoy our weekly GUFS newsletter and do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions, concerns or ideas to share.
With gratitude,
Mrs. Emig, Principal
MS Returns to Switching Classes
Starting on April 13, 2021, Grades 5-8 will begin rotating into different classrooms each period during the day. Switching classrooms offers students an opportunity to have a "change of scenery" and a chance to stretch their legs before transitioning into new subject matter. The students will also be assigned lockers which they will have access to during specified periods throughout the day. The locker assignments were provided to students. Nurse Melissa and Mrs. Emig reviewed safety protocols with students this afternoon. An email was also sent with more specific information.
State Testing Update
We recently received guidance on the adminsitration of the NYS ELA Assessment for Grades 3-8. Session 1, a mulitple-choice test, will only be administered. We will administer the test on Tuesday, April 20th during first period. Make-up sessions will be administered on Thursday, April 22 in the event your child is absent. Your child must be present to take the test in-person as it is not being offered remotely. If any ITutor student wants to come to school to to take the session 1 portion of the test, please contact Mrs. Emig via email at aemig@gufs.org. Mrs. Emig is happy to answer any of your additional questions via email regarding the ELA state test.
Important Student Drop-Off Reminders
Student Drop-Off is at 8:15am (not at 8:10am)
Buses are moving through the parking lots prior to 8:15am and it is important that students arriving via car-drop off not unload until 8:15am. The safety of our students is a priority and we request that those dropping off children in private transportation adhere to the 8:15am drop-off.
Use Nelson Lane Entrance for Arrival
As a reminder, all parents are to use the Nelson Lane entrance for student drop-off (not the traffic light entrance). This will promote safety and efficiency for student arrival while buses unload at 8:15am at the front of the building. For elementary student drop-off, you may not drop off students on the connector road because there is no sidewalk. As you approach the circle, Mr. Twardy and his team will faciliate moving cars toward the exit. When you approach the sidewalk, your child(ren) can safely exit your car to the right onto the side-walk. Please be courteous and have your child(ren) ready for unloading to encourage the flow of traffic.
Nurse Melissa's Corner
Thank you to our Garrison community for working so hard to stay safe. I am so proud to say I tested 24 students for COVID-19 after Spring Break and everyone was negative! That is a tribute to everyone's hard work, thank you. I will continue to test on Monday mornings prior to school so please contact me to book an appointment.
Be well,
Nurse Melissa

We are going outside often now so please check your children every night for ticks!
Kindergarten Orientation will be held April 27th from 10am-11am
Parents who have registered their child(ren) for Kindergarten for the 2021-2022 school year are invited to attend our Kindergarten Orientation taking place on Tuesday, April 27th from 10:00AM to 11:00AM at the Pavilion behind the school (weather permitting) or in the gymnasium (rain plan). This is a parent only event as the children will have an opportunity to see the school during Kindergarten Screening on May 11th and May 12th.
Come meet other Kindergarten parents and enjoy a presentation hosted by Principal Allison Emig; Kindergarten teacher, Stacy Ricci; and additional supporting teachers to the Kindergarten classroom. Nurse Melissa will also be present to answer questions regarding COVID-19 safety measures at GUFS.
If you have a child turning 5 years old by December 1, 2021 and you have not yet registered them for Kindergarten, there is still time to register and attend the Kindergarten Orientation! Please complete the student registration packet and email it to Catherine Mariani in the Main Office at cmariani@gufs.org. Once your registration is received, you are welcome to attend the event and sign up for your May 11th or 12th Kindergarten screening time.
