Read Across America

We had a wonderful week for Read Across America. It was a week of excitement to get our students active in reading. We had many guest speakers throughout the week visiting classrooms and reading to students. Below are pictures of our students in fun Dr. Seuss attire.

Battle of the Books...

Our Battle of the Books program concluded last Monday in an exciting match that saw two teams tie the battle with perfect scores!

5th graders Emily Nixon and Olivia Wangler tied with a 6th grade team comprised of Grant Meeker, Gauge Zsiga, and Kahlel Cook.

In the overall competition where the scores from all three battles were added together for a final score, Emily Nixon and Olivia Wangler were crowned the champions and will go on to represent Copper Creek in the district battle on April 6. Congratulations!

We had two teams that tied for second place overall including a team with Grant Meeker, Gauge Zsiga, and Kahlel Cook, and a team with Dan Yeryomenko, Ezra Addington, and Christian Halverson.

Thanks and congratulations to all of our participants this year who did a fantastic job in our competitions. Battle of the Books is a reading program funded by the Deer Valley Education Foundation for 5th and 6th grade students who work in teams of 2 or 3 to read 4 pre-selected books for 3 competitions during the year answer questions about the books they read.

State Testing is Coming Soon!!!

State testing is coming up for grades 3rd – 6th. It is important that your child is present for all scheduled testing sessions. Please avoid scheduling appointments on testing days to help prevent absences. Please take a look at our upcoming testing schedule to plan ahead.

Also, we are looking for peppermint donations for testing. If you are able to donate a bag of mints for testing, please bring them to the office. We greatly appreciate it! J

Note from Nurse Sara

Did you notice how illnesses like the flu seemed to disappear during the pandemic? Now that masks are off and we are no longer handwashing and sanitizing constantly, we are more susceptible to common viral and bacterial illnesses. This unfortunately means an uptick in illness. I get the same question with regularity from staff and parents alike. "Is something going around?" My usual response is, "Yes, anything."

Maricopa County reported an increase in Norovirus (Stomach Bug) cases last month. The best defenses against the spread of this are handwashing and keeping your child at home from school until they are vomiting and fever free for 24 hours.

Additionally, please let me know if your child is diagnosed with a contagious illness such as Strep or the flu. This enables me to advise other parents regarding the symptoms to be aware of in their own children. That is by far one of the best ways to keep infections from spreading at school.

Thank you for helping us keep our staff and students healthy at school.

A message from Coach Debra Abramson

Hello Copper Creek Heart Heroes!

You're the best! I'm so grateful for your support of Kids Heart Challenge (KHC) and the American Heart Association’s life-saving mission this year! You’ve supported our school and our communities. THANK YOU!

We are excited to announce that we raised an OUTSTANDING $14,289 in lifesaving donations for the AHA! There were 225 students who took a heart healthy, or heart happy pledge and 45 students learned lifesaving skills by completing Finn’s Mission. We could not have done this without your support. THANK YOU and Congratulations!

If you have not already complete Finn’s Mission today -- share to Facebook! Remember every donation counts and I’m so proud of you! If you have completed 7 steps or less of Finn’s Mission and you are having difficulties with your badges highlighting, please contact morgan.porter@heart.org so we can get it fixed for you and give your child the recognition they deserve!

Thank you for being the Torch, Copper Creek Families. We couldn’t do this heart work without YOU!

STUDENT SAFETY

FRIENDLY REMINDER:

Thank you for your patience as we continue our parking lot procedures each week. Just a friendly reminder to pull all the way forward in the blue lane at drop off and pick up each day (and remain in your car). To help assist, please encourage your child to search for you vehicle to help with the flow of traffic. This will allow you to remain in your car and your child will be directed to you. Lastly, please only use the exits for leaving the parking lot. By entering through our parking lot exit only, that will make for unnecessary accidents.

  • Teachers do not start morning duty until 8:15 am each day.
  • Please do not drop off your children at school before 8:15 am.
  • Gates to the school will remain locked until 8:15 am each morning.
  • Please do not park in the bike lane on Hillcrest Blvd for student pick-up / drop-off.

We appreciate your cooperation. Thank you!

We have a new system for parents to sign in and/or sign out

We are continuing our new system for parents who are coming to the office to either sign in or to sign out your student(s). When you arrive on campus please bring your cell phone and id, we have a QR Code you will scan with your phone in place of signing a sheet of paper. This is another way for us to go paperless and keep up to date with other schools in the area who are also utilizing the sign-in/out QR Code.
