Summer Career Investigation Opportunities Baystate Franklin Student Ambassador Program

Are you interested in finding out more about careers in the Healthcare Field? Baystate Franklin has a Student Ambassador Program offered this summer. There are two sessions July 11-15 or August 8-12 from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Students will shadow nine different areas of the hospital over the week. There are 10 spots available in each session, applications are due May 1st. Please see Ms. Neuenschwander for an application.

2022 CONGRESSIONAL ACADEMY DAY

If you wish to learn more about service-connected educational and career opportunities, as well as the application procedures for service academies, you are welcome to join Congressman Richard Neal and Representatives from the US Service Academies, Norwich, Mass Maritime, and ROTC at an informational meeting.

2022 ACADEMY DAY Each Year, Congressman Neal hosts an Academy Day. This is an informational seminar for young people interested in pursuing an Academy or similar education path. While it is recommended that interested juniors in High School attend Academy Day, interested high school students of all ages are welcome to attend. Through the years, this forum has become a valuable tool for interested students and their families to learn about service academies and other similar educational opportunities, and a useful first step in the process of obtaining a nomination to a service academy. The United States Military Academy; United States Naval Academy; the United States Air Force Academy; and the United States Merchant Marine Academy are the four service academies needing a nomination, and all participate in our Academy Day. Additionally, the United States Coast Guard Academy; Mass Maritime Academy; Norwich University; and ROTC programs are invited to participate, expanding the information available to young people. This year, Academy Day will be held on Sunday, May 15, at 12 pm, at the Springfield Museums. All participants must pre-register. Stone Soup Café is launching a Culinary Institute!

What will you learn?

  • Training and practice in the fundamentals of cooking

  • Improved knife techniques

  • Preparing stocks, soups, sauces, desserts, poultry, fish & meat

  • Culinary math & measurements

  • Safe-handling and service of food and beverages (ServSafe)

  • Professional development and resume building

  • Internships at local businesses

  • Professional coaching and evaluation of leadership style

  • Teamwork-based approaches to identify, define, respond to, and evaluate problems in various foodservice industry situations and offer resolutions to these problems.

The Culinary Institute will prepare students for various types of cooking positions in the diverse field of foodservice. The 12-week program will result in a Food Handlers License, a ServSafe Certificate, and job skills and references for securing work in the vibrant and emerging food culture here in Pioneer Valley.

Our 12-week program will include 4 days of in-person class onsite at Stone Soup Café (9am - 1pm), and the 5th day at Stone Soup Cafe and/or interning at different restaurants in the area.

Who can apply?

Applications to the Stone Soup Culinary Institute (SSCI) will be available to all, and we especially are looking to grow a cohort of students who are currently in recovery, formerly incarcerated, people living in poverty who need a new career path, and all other community members who are interested in culinary arts or a new career path.

We are partnering with local stakeholders at Greenfield Community College, Franklin County Sheriff's Kimball House and Re-entry Program, and The Opioid Task Force to seek the ideal candidates for our pilot cohort of students.

The initial pilot course will be FREE for all students.

  • Commitment to show up on time
  • Interested in starting a new career or advancing your current culinary skills

New Pre-College Programs for Summer 2022 at UMass

UMass Amherst has several new pre-college programs available this summer for rising 10th - 12th graders. Their pre-college programs offer students firsthand experience with college-level academics and campus life and are a great way to explore potential majors.

How to Apply

All rising 10th - 12th graders are eligible to apply online via our website. Interested students must provide:

  • a brief, 1-page statement of interest
  • an unofficial high school transcript (including current academic year)
  • a letter of recommendation from a teacher or school counselor
  • a $35 application fee

Admissions are rolling through June 15th. Students are encouraged to apply early.

Shelburne Falls Fire District Water Department is looking for 1-2 students 16+ to assist with simmer maintenance. You can start as soon as school is out! Monday-Friday 7:30am-3:30pm. Duties include lawn mowing, weed trimming, brush clearing, and assisting the Water Dept. with seasonal cleanups and water work. Must be able to operate a lawnmower and lawn equipment. The Town of Ashfield is looking for LIFEGUARDS at the Ashfield Lake this summer!

• Enforce all swimming area rules in a consistent manner; • Maintain concentrated observation of the swimming and beach area and be alert or prevent accidents (risk management); • Carry out rescues and initiate emergency actions as necessary; • Identify potential accident hazards; • Give immediate first aid in the event of injury to a bather or other incident; • Handle discipline situations with courtesy and fairness; • Be comfortable handling stray dog removal from beach area; • Perform daily restroom cleaning and general beach maintenance, including but not limited to raking the beach, cleaning debris from water and shoreline, picking up trash, ONLY when swimmers are NOT in the water; • All other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications Education and Experience Education commensurate with age level. Some experience in lifeguarding is desirable, but not required. Must possess a valid work permit if age-appropriate. Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills Knowledge Red Cross Lifeguard Training and/or Water Safety Instructor Certification, CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications


Zoar Outdoor Adventure Resort is now recruiting seasonal, part-time, and full-time staff to provide our guests with unforgettable experiences! Teachers and recent high school grads have been some of our best employees.
Specifically, we are primarily looking for entry-level raft and zip guides. Like others in the service industry, we were short-staffed last year and anticipating a large hire this spring. Approximately 45 new guides in total. Guides need to be 18 by their first day of work. Training is taking place during April vacation, with a second session in mid-May.
We have limited opportunities for students under the age of 18. We will be hiring a weekend parking host, a photographer (but they need a car), and 1-2 kitchen and cleaning staff. All these positions have variable start dates.

How do I get a Work Permit in Massachusetts?

You must get a Work Permit at the School District where you live.

At Mohawk Trail Regional School, obtaining a Work Permit is a 2 step process:

  1. You must have a job offer from an employer

  2. After you have a job offer, download a Work Permit Application or stop by the Student Services office at MTRS

MASSACHUSETTS STATE LAW: ALL MINORS MUST OBTAIN AND HAVE FILLED OUT THE EMPLOYMENT PERMIT APPLICATION FOR 14 TO 17-YEAR-OLDS BEFORE A WORK PERMIT CAN BE ISSUED.


STEP 1:

The Employment Permit Application form (Promise of Employment form) can be downloaded Here or Picked up in the Student Services Office.


14 and 15-year-olds: There are 4 sections that MUST be filled out and signed on the Employment Permit Application before the Work Permit can be issued.

  1. The first section is completed and signed by the employer

  2. The second section is to be completed and signed by the Doctor’s office or Medical office where the minor had a physical within the last year. We can not accept a copy of a physical; this has to be signed by a physician according to State Law.

  3. The third section is filled out and signed by the parent or legal guardian of the minor

  4. The fourth section is signed and dated by the minor


16 and 17-year-olds: There are 3 sections that must be filled out and signed on the Employment Permit Application before the Work Permit can be issued.

  1. The first section is completed and signed by the employer

  2. The third section is filled out and signed by the parent or legal guardian of the minor

  3. The fourth section is signed and dated by the minor


STEP 2:

*The Minor (student) must bring the completed Employment Permit Application form, their student ID, and a document that shows their birth date on it to the High School (MTRS Student Services) where the Work Permit will be filled out by the Authorized agent (MTRS Registrar/Shana Garcia). Documents MUST be originals; fax or copies will not be accepted. THE AUTHORIZED AGENT, MUST BY LAW, WITNESS THE MINOR SIGNING THE WORK PERMIT BEFORE IT CAN BE ISSUED.

12th GRADE NEWS

FINANCIAL AID LETTERS

With most college decisions all released, students and caregivers are reviewing their Financial Aid Award letters. These letters tell you how much you will be expected to pay. The financial aid package may contain loans, scholarships, grants, and work-study. Oftentimes it is confusing to figure out how much you will need to pay to the school.

Make an appointment with Ms. Neuenschwander if you would like help going over your financial aid packages. She can help you figure out exactly what the college is offering and help you understand which financial aid package is the best option.

11TH GRADE CAREER AND COLLEGE READINESS

11th-grade students that are interested in attending a four-year college after next year can be spending time in May researching their college lists and planning visits. Students can meet with Ms. Neuenschwander to support this research process. Additionally, during activity time over the next six weeks students can meet with Ms. Neuenschwander and Mr. Sussbauer to research and build their college lists.


FIELD TRIP TO A COLLEGE FAIR - MAY 23rd

All 11th-grade students are invited to attend a College Fair at Franklin Pierce College on Monday, May 23rd. The bus will leave MTRS at 8:00 a.m. and return by 1:00 p.m. This is a great opportunity for students to speak with multiple college admissions representatives. All 11th-grade students have been given a permission slip which needs to be returned by May 16th. Click here for a list of the colleges that will be in attendance.


Next Career and College Activity: Students will learn the importance of a resume, what it is used for, and how to create one to use for employment for college applications Additionally, 11th-grade students will be meeting with current 12th-grade students about the college application process.
