National Day of Silence 2024
Hopkinton High School will be participating in a National Day of Silence on Friday, April 12, 2024. The Day of Silence was created by a University of Virginia student named Maria Pulzetti. She felt that LGBTQ youth were consistently silenced and ignored by parents and administrators, and that their concerns and complaints were falling on deaf ears. Inspired by this, Maria created the Day of Silence as a one-time event held during the University’s LGBTQ pride week. She believed the day would promote awareness amongst those who might not have been tuned into these issues, by surrounding them with a silence they couldn’t help but notice. In 1997, one year after the day’s creation, it went national, with over 100 institutions participating. In 2000, GLSEN, one of the largest LGBTQ education networks in the country, adopted the Day of Silence as one of their official projects. Today, students at all levels participate in the day. At the end of day, the silence is typically broken with a rally or speaking event, allowing all participants to end their vow together. Today, there are over 10,000 institutions registered as participants in the day of silence. All 50 states are represented in this number, as well as a number of other countries, including Singapore and New Zealand. Day of Silence continues to grow, as more and more people become aware of the issues facing LGBTQ youth.
If you wish to participate you must register through this form by Wednesday 4/10 at noon. Participation pins will be handed out the morning of 4/12 in the auditorium beginning at 7:30. You must be registered in order to participate. Teachers will be informed of your participation so they can adjust their lessons and you must wear your pin throughout the day. We will be breaking our silence at the end of the day in the auditorium. If you have questions reach out to Valerie - vvonrosenvinge@hopkinton.k12.ma.us

Students cannot leave their bags and/or athletic gear by the front door of the building. Gear should be dropped off in the locker rooms before the start of the day or carried with students throughout the day.

Ambassador Girl Scout Troop 68243
TAKING ACTION FOR MENTAL HEALTH
Hello! We’re Ambassador Girl Scout Troop 68243! Being students at Hopkinton High School as well as teenagers, we’ve noticed that when it comes to mental health, body image and managing stress, teens-–and people in general, feel they are not heard. In order to create a safe community, issues like these must be talked about, and resources must be supplied and easily accessible to help navigate these challenges.
Before we graduate, we are looking to restock our “Little Free Library” at the Hopkinton Center for the Arts in their Mindfulness Garden with books for all ages about healthy relationships, self-esteem, mental health, body positivity, self-help and mindfulness. On May 1st, the start of Mental Health Awareness month, we will also launch our newly revised Bee-YOU-tiful website to include information about our library, our books, and the different mental health resources here in Hopkinton. Stay tuned!
HOW CAN YOU HELP? In an effort to fill our Little Library and provide necessary resources for individuals and the community, we are collecting donations through April 26th!
Here is a QR code to our Amazon Wish List, which reflects the recommendations of many of our Hopkinton Public School’s administrators, counselors, and health teachers as well as many mental health professionals in our Hopkinton community. They are books for all age groups that are relevant to our mission. When ordering, please select Alyssa Thompson, our Girl Scout Leader, for the shipping address.
Please feel free to share about our project! The more people who know, the more people who can help!
If you have any questions just email us here @: hopgstroop68243@gmail.com
